The Old Folks Home

Our forecast for today:

Today
Sunny, with a high near 96. Heat index values as high as 106. South southwest wind 9 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

Chance for thunderstorms tonight then only 88 tomorrow with temps only rising to the low 90s by the 4th.

What can I say, it's pretty much normal for Missouri this time of the year.:idunno I truly do not know how the Amish tolerate it, although you see a lot of Hammocks going up on porches so the kids can sleep out at night along with tents in the back yard. They do not modify their clothing here in the summer. Still the long sleeves for both men and women and the black or blue dresses and shirts. White shirts on Sunday. I'd be keeling over from heat stroke.:thI've been in houses this time of the year where they have the cook stove cranked up and the windows all but closed. Feels like about a gazillion degrees inside.

Guess I was never meant to be Amish. No AC no Fans, no Electricity, no Computers for entertainment. No BYC!:hit

What I'm worried about with the Iris is damaging the rhizomes. I buy our Roundup, a generic brand of glyphosate at the local MFA. I could ask them. I've used vinegar to kill out a bush before. I had a big bush at my old house back in IL that had a tree growing up out of the middle of it. Since I had a flower bed nearby I didn't want to harm any of the plants in it so I mixed up vinegar with table salt and brought it to a boil. While still hot I poured about a quart directly on the bush and tree stump. Killed it deader than a door knob.

Back out to the timber this morning to bring in more wood. Taking water with us but it's pretty comfortable back there compared with not being in the timber.

Also if it can't be used, what can be used that doesn't kill iris?
Fingers ;) And then if you put a plastic border between where the grass is coming from and the irises, it should be easier to keep the grass at bay.

Wonder if I should put the air conditioner in ...
Yes

Lol may e nylons would work better.
I'm sure the squirrels will look splendid in nylons. And maybe they will spend so much time admiring themselves they will leave your plants alone.

Iris rhizomes should not be covered with mulch...or dirt for that matter (too easy for them to rot in our humidity).
Because grasses usually spread by runner and not seed, corn gluten meal (Preen) isn't much help on perennials like Iris but will work around annual crops like onions or in an area where grass isn't a problem.
I find that making the Iris beds my first priority for weeding and keeping the area around them clear works best. If something gets started due to my laziness , digging the Iris out, cleaning the area and replanting makes me more diligent.
I love my Irises, too. This wasn't a good year for them...too cold late and then hot.

Gorgeous:eek:Amazing:love

That is what happened with my Iris. Didn't get lazy, we were moving and the flower beds got neglected that summer and the grass crept in and took over. I've tried pulling and manual weeding but those grass roots are tough.

I'll get a picture soon and post it. My only option may be to dig them all up this fall and manually clean them up and replant them.
