The Old Folks Home

I wanted to hang on to 59. It was like a milestone year. Once 60 hits it was like okay, I'm officially a fogey now. 65 was like. Oh gee....I'm officially elderly. Thanks to the marvels of modern medicine I don't feel 65 and thanks to good genes I don't look it either.

But looking back at 59 from 65, yeah, you young whippersnappers.

Did get a bad blow to my psyche yesterday from the Rheumy PA. I casually mentioned 'so at some point I'll be able to ride my dirt bike again?' and she shook her head slightly and muttered 'ummm no' then told me about low impact exercises that were permitted.

But she doesn't understand!!! I'm a high impact sort of person!:hit
My DW had a similar conversation with her Dr. about cycling. He said that there is impact when you get off of the cycle.

She is still going to train for a ride in France this summer though

I second that @pertnear09. Another :hugsfrom me, @getaclue.

@ronott1, she seriously needs to consider switching to a trike or recumbent of some sort. If she is going to do a lot of hills she would need an upright but you really need to check them out. I switched to a trike years ago. I have a recumbent bike but my trike is my baby.

DH and I both used to race recumbents before our health took a turn on us. If you want to see what we used to do, check out:

If you click on the link second from the bottom HPRA ultracycling and racing event, the cyclist in the thumbnails wearing the blue riding clothes and pedalling a trike is yours truly back in 06.

Trikes are really great for joint problems.

That is a good idea!
She will be renting a cycle in France as part of the trip. Maybe they will have trikes

Nice story about the cycle event!

So much ice out there. It's been freezing rain now about 28 hours (we got a little bit of snow yesterday to mix it up) but it is an icy death trap outside. BF got called back to work at 0300, I was awake anyway, so just got up and went and treated the driveway best I could then did early chores. He just got back home and said the roads were pretty bad, too. If you hear a scream rumble in about 20 minutes that's me, sliding down the driveway.

I never thought I'd make it to 60, but I did. I swore the chemo, and medications afterward aged me at least 12 years. The second go around with all of it, I sometimes feel like I'm 80.

"Stand firm against all odds." And yet we drag our butts out of bed and warrior on. :hugs

@superchemicalgirl hope the roads are passable. At my point in life I just refuse to drive on ice.

@ronott1, my husband went to Spain for a cycling tour before we met and suggests that if she has access to a bike carrier, she could break her own bike down and take it with her. That is what he did other than rent a bike once he was in Spain for the tour. He said he would be worried that the rental bikes weren't as well maintained as his was so he took his Trek along.

Everyone dealing with weather please take care on the roads and at home.

They are calling for snow here on Friday and into Saturday. 2-4 inches but they are still in the guessing game as far as exact amounts. Everyone I encountered on Monday was wary of the nice weather that we were having knowing that sooner or later mother nature was going to throw a hissy fit at us. Frankly, I would enjoy a little snow and cold to kill off the viruses that are around.

Critter and I took advantage of the one really good day this week to go clean up my parents' yard. Mom has always been an avid gardener, but her recent health issues have made working in the yard impossible, and the yard was pretty disheveled. My folks have a "yard guy" that they pay to do this stuff, but he hasn't been there since the grass stopped growing and apparently charges by the item. Yes, they could have called him out to do the work, but I doubt he'd have gone at it with nearly the will that we did. It still won't win any prizes, but after several hours of weeding, pruning, mulching, etc, at least Mom can look out her windows without cringing now. We're planning to drive up to do some more in a couple of weeks.

Mom wasn't feeling too well. She'd been to the hospital to get a scan and biopsy done on Monday; while there, she fell and her hand hit something and wound up peeling a big patch of skin off the back of it. She said they wanted to take her down to the Emergency department and get some x-rays done, but she said she didn't feel like anything was seriously damaged, and if they did that, she'd have to reschedule the procedure that was the reason she was there in the first place. As it is, she was there most of the day. So, she was still quite a bit shaken and sore while we were there; I hope the improved view from her windows makes her feel better.

All this talk of cycling makes me want to get my bike out and go for a ride. @microchick will probably get this joke - it's a powder blue Trek that I call "the Andorian."
