The Old Folks Home

I was going to say redbud too! We have them around here, in the yard and in the woods, and in these parts they signal that morel season is underway :)

The clincher would be, if in the fall your tree is covered in dangly seedpods that look like paper thin, dark brown snowpea pods. That is 100% redbud behavior,

Best - exop

Yes! That happened for the first time this past year! I did not like them! No not at all! Ugly things. :( This tree is still young, so, we didn't have any pods until this last year.

We have been having some heavy rains and storms here in NC. I took these photos yesterday with my cellphone. I love to see the lightening in the cloud formations. Not the best photo quality but still fun to see! The clouds looked like they were on fire!

Beautiful!!

Sparkle the House Silkie has been trying to kick her HUGE chicks (not hers, they were flock eggs I gave her) to the curb but they love her too much. She also started laying again three days ago.

Today she announced her latest egg VERY loudly and for over ten minutes. For such a diminutive chicken, she sure can bellow the news! She doesn't sing the usual Egg Song like other hens.

Is this a silkie trait? I've only had one silkie pullet before but she met an unfortunate end before she reached point of lay.

Sparkle is still going on and on about it.... Oh, there she... Nope... Just took a breath, apparently.

I dunno, Linda. I have a showgirl that was born 01.01.2012... and has YET to lay me an egg. Just not interested. But she will chew me out if I'm late getting out to the run to put her to bed.

Lovely thunderstorm pictures. Can't wait for our first one. It's like the first snowstorm of the season... so magical.

Does she sound like she's just a slip away from sounding like the Wicked Witch of the West? I have one who does that, and I can't help but laugh at her 'ferocious' voice, daring a predator to come get her, just spare the egg.

Nice lightning shots! We've had a few thunderstorms, but we're really just ramping up for tornado season. I think most folks who are from this region love it and miss it when it's quiet too long. Besides, I could really use a new car. I just need the hail to come for me, since I haven't a garage!!

Yup, that's the cacophony, all right! "I'll get you, my pretty - and your little dog too!"

That is too funny! We don't have the really wicked tornadoes here in NC. I cannot imagine how crazy that must be. It has to be frightening! A real adrenaline rush.
I'll be driving my Flintstone Wagon for 20 more years if I had to wait on a tornado to get a new car. Probably, if I parked it under a tree, the wind would just pull up the tree and smash my cheap plastic mailbox!

Linda, tell Sparkle to chill for a few more days or else the chicks won't get her a mother's day card - not even a "cheep" one. I've been hinting to my son that my AMC movie card is running on fumes so I hope I get one. I'm not the flowers and jewelry type. Candy is okay but the movie cards last longer.

Cynthia I'll make it unanimous that is a redbud - your garden is beautiful,.Out here the tulips don't come back year after year- at least mine never do. Maybe the danged squirrel or chipmunk has been eating the bulbs. Oddly enough snapdragons keep coming back and I don't sow seeds. The ones next to the house stay green almost thru the entire winter. I bet if I planted seeds none would come up.

Hosta are finally emerging and lily of the valley, - the daffodils are finished and I'm finding tiny grape hyacinths through out the back yard - not anywhere near to where they were planted.

It's raining!

It is the first significant rain in several weeks. My frog tadpoles have already morphed into mini frogs, but my toad tadpoles have been threatened by drying up vernal pools. Anyone know why toads, at least around here, breed so much later than frogs? Being the nut that I am, I have been carrying buckets of water to replenish the pools.

This rain will be their (and my) salvation.
