The Old Folks Home

I am busy today, watching a pair of Cayugas show their newly-hatched brood of five ducklings around the yard. I swear I am not getting ANYTHING else done ...

This is the first time I have seen a drake participate in family matters. Guess it helps they were a bonded pair before she went broody.

In chicken matters, I am simply amazed at Punkin's ability as a momma. For the short month she went outside daily as a pullet before she went broody in the dog bed, she must have studied or something. She's a hatchery bird, never had no momma of her own but me, and yet she takes her 3 chicks outside every day to forage, and not just in the fenced garden. She gets all 3 of them back into the house and the dog bed every evening.

Sparkle's four Hooligans, on the other hand, like dust bathing in the garden, but they prefer to hang out in the house. I am constantly shooing them outside. There are two cockerels and two pullets. The cockerels are mommas' boys. Sparkle is laying again, not all that interested in raising them any more. The biggest clue is she eats treats now, instead of dropping them for the Hooligans. She even snatches treats from them, if she can.

I found one of the cockerels on my vanity, frozen in a stare-down with its mirror image. (Photo proof to be uploaded later.)

I am waiting for Dottie to hatch out these eggs. She is on the tower of clothes
in a dishpan with six eggs. Today is Day 17.
IF, they hatch not sure what to do so she can be with them.
And they can eat,
Do you have ideas as to what I can do ?

lol..SCG...I met my DH at a church dance. I thought what a nice guy right off the bat. Then, he told me that he had 7 kids. I just thought the mom had them after a divorce. Like me, with 4 children after two divorces. I found out that he had the kids! Mom had committed suicide. :( I remember telling my mother that I had met the nicest man. But..he had 7 kids, and there was no way I was going out with him again, we had already had one date when I told her this, and that's when the news came out that the had the kids. I told her, nice, but can't get serious with him because I couldn't imagine 11 kids together. Well, long story short of course...he really Was a good guy! No dating silly games at all. Sincere. Very kind. Well, that's all she wrote. Then we had one little guy together..so...12 kids. His, mine, and ours. Was it tough? Oh yeah! But today, those kids of his are so loving to me. They tell me that they are so thankful that I came along when I did. There were a lot of teens in that house at one time..whew! They are mine..that's all there is to it. What a blessing they are to me. When I married him, I got double the love ~ in the long run. They didn't know what to think of me at first, but they all tell me that they love me today..grown up and with children of their own. We now have 31 grandchildren, and one on the way. Lots of love!

What a nice story. I do love happy endings. Thank you for sharing. Can't imagine the stories you have of pandemonium in the house... I remember the insanity of sharing a bathroom with ONE sister.

I'll send you some. We've had a good amount after three years of drought. I won't miss one of our rains.

My eyes!! They' hurt from sooooo much CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTE!!

Doncha love those early duck eggs, they are HUGE and most are doubles, and so yummy! Never baked a better cake in my life, thing almost rose out of the oven door!

Frogs, frogs. Have so many here it's almost deafening at dusk and dawn. Tree frogs, stream frogs, they're everywhere! Up here there is an actual "Amphibian Club" they go around every late spring and try to identify all the species, and as we have a stream thru our property, they knock on our door every year letting us know they are lurking. Amazing with the winters here how these things survive.

The butterflies are starting here, they are everywhere. Maine is just a magical place in spring and summer. If we could only get rid of the black flies, they are BRUTAL right now after 2 years of almost none. Oh well, everybody's got to eat, and they'll be gone by the 4th of July. Do have tons of swallows, and they get pretty thick on a good fly day, swooping everywhere gobbling them up, and watch the chickens jump up and catch them as well. Beautiful thing, love the cat duckling pic, how in the world did you get her/him to do that? My cat is terrified of them, but he will snuggle between the 2 golden retrievers...

Vanilla works wonders in keeping the blackflies away. It works with most flying pests: flies, gnats, mosquitos, etc.

ducklucky, I love your description of spring in Maine, I felt like I was there. Actually the closest I ever got to Maine was ordering from the LLBean catalog. I'm not a traveler. So this was really nice except for the blackflies.

Linda, I'm still waiting for the photo of the rooster staring down at himself in the mirror. You know the BYC rules, IF you don't have a photo, IT never happened.

I can't take it anymore. I need an explanation of your avatar.

Ducky can have the blackflies. I've got the mosquitos covered. And if it makes you feel better, I'm about 45 minutes from LL Bean and I still order online most of the time.

I wish I was back in Maine . . . . . miss the smell of the ocean, and the squawk of seagulls.

We built a wooden box of plywood scraps for one broodie with 13 ( she was misssing for 3 weeks.) It was 3 x 3 and worked for a good month. THen let her out to free range and she would return at night with brood.

Otherwise perhaps a large dog crate with cardboard fit along the sides (8" high to keep little ones in with momma hen.

Closet?? With dog gate.

OOkay My avatar is me when I was 10 + years younger & at the peak of my beauty. I've gone downhill fast. I'm not surprised you question my avatar. I'm from one of the smallest ethnic groups. I am a Conehead from Remulac, south of France. You may have seen my relatives Beldar, Prymat & Connie on the old, old Saturday Night skits. Honestly, they treated them like circus side show freaks.

I've been living in seclusion most of my life but, found such warm acceptance on BYC that I decided to "come out." Response has been mostly favorable - BYC is open to all. But,now and then I get people asking where they can get a hat like mine. I have to confess it isn't a hat, it's my head. You know how some people judge others by their "headgear" - well , it makes me nervous

How very appropriate that you have poultry to hand out the chicken ova at Halloween, then!!
