The Old Folks Home

Welcome, spurs! I think the caterpillar hatching is very cool! Nice lookin' flock o' chickens, too! What else can I use those exclamation marks for.. Let's see... Gosh, but I am tired today! I spent all day with John the Contractor, most of it back at Home Depot. The economy must be picking up, as there were hoardes of folks loading their trucks with building materials. Not enough helpers for loading. But everything we need for the first coop on the new property is now on site, including hinges, latches, electrical wire and conduit. The ONLY item not yet purchased is hardware cloth. No run materials yet, though. I chose a deep green color for the paint OTHER than "Hunter Green," only noticing later it was called "Whispering Pines." How perfect! While we were waiting to get into position for loading the materials, another old work truck pulled up next to John's. What are the odds the only two actually running and in use 1957 Chevrolet trucks in El Dorado County would be side by side in the loading area of the Placerville Home Depot?!? I mean ones not restored for auto shows. You should have seen these two men chatting up the merits of their trucks and exclaiming over the other's. John even took photos of them together. My energy just ran out. I am off to bed.

That moth was beautiful!

I put a piece of plastic under my screened bottom board in my hive to look for the mites. I only saw less than 10 after 2 days. The experts suggest that you treat if you see more than 20 and have a bad infestation if you have more than 50. I decided to treat, anyway, with the less effective and less toxic method. I want my bees to overwinter well. I'll be trying to make a candy board later this weekend.

I suggest putting ashes in your turtle along with the sand.

Hope y'all have a lovely weekend.

This is our 2nd year with bees and they have wintered great! We let them keep all the honey they made last year and this year. We will begin taking it in the spring to sell. Are you a member of your state's bee keepers association? We have meetings here the 1st Monday of every month. I know every state has 1. Its only a $10 registration fee I think. I hate bees, but support my husband in his hobby as he supports me in mine with the chickens lol.

I honestly love my bees. I was absolutely terrified of them when I first got them, but they have won me over with their gentleness and how interesting they are. I can sit at the side of the entrance and just watch them come and go for hours. I was shocked that I could mow the lawn right up to their entrance and they didn't care. I haven't been stung, yet. I didn't get honey this year, they had a really rough summer with it alternating between being insanely hot and dry and then cold and rainy. And that's okay. I do want the honey, but I'd rather them be healthy and pollinating my plants than be my honey-making slaves.

I am a member of the Knox-Lincoln County Beekeepers, as my county doesn't have an active group. We are also encouraged to join the state apiary, report how many hives you have, how much honey you pulled off and how many hives died over winter, and I did that as well.

BF is pretty supportive in all my ventures, which I'm grateful for. He was a bit irritated at the turkeys earlier this week. They have apparently decided that his truck is the best possible thing to roost on in the area and has scratched his paint up a bit. On Wednesday he went to pick up the smoker I bought, and ended up slicing his finger pretty badly during the transport. When he got home he ran upstairs to tend to his wound and told me to go down to the truck and get his bag out. By the time I got outside there was a turkey on the smoker in the bed of the truck and another turkey roosting on the side of the bed. I shooed them off. He then moved his truck to the side yard where the smoker would live, and as he was backing his truck up the same two turkeys got on the hood of his truck and were making turkey noises at him while staring through the windshield at him. I found it enormously entertaining. He reminded me that we're going to be smoking those turkeys on the smoker they like so much. I don't think that can come soon enough for him.

Hopefully the addition of the smoker gets him to buy me a pig.

Have you ever ate a pig that has been cooked in the ground? They are so tender and juicy the meat just falls off the bone. My DSIL has done some and then they have a pig pickin party! Everyone just picks meat off the pig and eats all they want. And it's so good you can't quit eating.
