The Old Folks Home

Tomorrow's high may not get above freezing; tomorrow night we're headed back into the teens again. To the best of my knowledge, the only time on record that it got down to 0oF here was Christmas, 1989. Yes, when I was a child, I lived in places where weather like that wasn't unusual. But because it isn't the usual thing here, we have to take steps to deal with it, that may have to be un-done in another day or two.

Here in Midlands SC..forecasted 13F. I have one rooster to figure out how to keep him from getting the comb frostbit. I found a translucent plastic storage container today at Dollar Store. Big and square. Ima cut a door in it, tuen it upside down on the ground, toss in some straw, and hopefully he'll be smart enough to use it the next 3 days to stay warm. Kind of like a green house. Putting him on top of the washing machine....didn't work so good.
My barred rock hen.......his mate when it warms back up again...she is running around half naked. I can see bare skin on her butt, and now skin on her breast. Looks like she'll be inside. No way for her really to keep from freezing. It won't warm back up here till Thursday.

It is fah-reeeezing here. 16F and snowing. Cricket and Dottie are cuddling on the old cistern and all the rest are on the porch laying up against the kitchen door. I gave them warm water to drink and all my fries. Cricket and Dottie got to share a piece of carrot cake. I have the bottom of the babies coop wrapped in plastic. Stepped out onto the porch a bit ago to check on them and stepped in warm poo...in my socks..serves me right for not putting on my boots first. Maddy and I found out that bubbles won't freeze. Darn!

And on the usually freezing side of the country, we had a high of 54 today and RAIN. And flooding. So much flooding. There was a foot and a half of water in some of our parking lots at work today because all the drains were clogged with snow/slush/ice chunks. The facilities crew did an excellent job of getting us notified to move our cars before it got into the engine/interior and got the drains unplugged quick.

Whatever warm front blew through here is going away quickly, tonight, and we'll be back down into the teens, which means that all the glare ice that we have now from rain on top of packed snow is going to be delightful in the morning. It will seem like the plow and sand/salt trucks will instead be Zambonis.

Because of all the melting and rain my garage flooded today. What was melting and what was coming down found the path of least resistance into the garage. I spent the last 2 hours doing civil engineering work - building canals through the ice and shuttling water from the garage to the canals and down the hilly driveway. We have about 3 inches of packed ice that I had to hack through with a hammer, crowbar and shovel. I was going to work out today on the treadmill, but naaaah I'm bushed.

Stay warm, y'all. I feel bad for those of you that aren't used to it.

Maybe you could just lock him up in there rather than hope he finds it.
I have 5 roosters in a coop with a propane heater I've been able to raise the building to 20F from below zero.
I have 2 more roosters I'm going to stick in there tonight. So far they haven't killed each other.

I went out to check on the roosters and the heater. Normally they pile up in a corner of the coop far from the door. The propane heater is in the middle of the floor. it puts out a soft red glow. The building was up to over 40° and they had all moved in front of the heater. It looked like a fraternity party with a bunch of dudes passed out in front of the fireplace.

My chickens are crazy I guess, they are outside in this freezing cold when I got the heat on in the coop... I went out to check on them at 7:30 am worried my my heat lamp may have burned out. Luckily it did not! Frozen water this morning so I had to split a gallon and a half on the chickens and the dogs? I hope the water thaws out sometime today
