Without the beard...anyone?..we need one without the beard.

Congratulations on your ever growing family! How nice that 4 generations will be able to get to know each other.

Feeling like a bit of a wimp tonight. I'm sitting here with all of my fingers and toes tender with the after effects of frost nip. I seem to have spent most of my day schlepping water to a variety of critters. There are ways of dealing with these things, of course, but since temperatures like these seldom happen more than a handful of times per winter here, it hardly seems worth the investment. I know that to a lot of you, a day with the temps in the 20's seems balmy at this time of year, but being out in it all day has wiped me out. By this weekend, we'll be in the 60's again.

20 may seem balmy to us but it's still cold and still below freezing -- still dangerous to exposed flesh and still causes headaches like frozen waterers. It can be even more of a pain to those of you not used to it - up here we at least have the tools to battle it. I can't imagine trying to fight it without all of our specially designed outerwear and farm technology.

I can't imagine being one of those people trapped on the train overnight in the snow, talk about a bad experience...

Cynthia- Congrats on the GGbaby...and....33rd Grandchild!?? !!!

I thought my 10 was a good number (well, I am 51, maybe that's too many for my age

).

SCG...your chicken coop is better insulated than my whole house!! Our bedromm was new construction back in 2002, apparently, but it still had no insulation in the ceiling when we bought the place.

Just before I relocated myself to SC, I was in KS the winter of 07', when the eastern half of KS froze up, iced up, and shut down. 2.5 weeks with now heat, no power. all I had was my NG stove and oven. The furnace was gas, but the igniter was electric. My bedroom in that mobile home got down to 37F, right before the power came back on. My poor Maine coon cat was complaining about the house temps.

Here, last night, the propane fireplace pilot went out again. Our bedroom temps seem to stabilize at 51F...for now.

Well since i didnt get any eggs to hatch I made a hasty decision and went and picked up 12 roosters from a lady that was giving them away. Some for freezer camp, some to rebuild our Bantam flock that was destroyed during the ice storm, don't worry I have made improvements to prevent that from ever happening again, and some new blood lines for my big chickens, WHAT WAS I THINKING!!! It was a blood bath here this morning, Roosters fighting everywhere, Hens running for the hills and me just boggle minded! Lesson Learned there!!

IMO it sometimes goes better if the hens are out of sight of the rooster house. There will still be the pecking order stuff and roosters' pecking order is more violent.
You have to keep an eye on them as some will keep others from food and water and they'll actually starve. Lots of feeders scattered around.

It was cold Here in Woodland\Davis California. London cold, not Arctic cold.

It was 41 degrees with SW 6mph winds. It was a bit foggy with a 500 ft. Ceiling. The Foggy cold air was brutal!

I hope the cold gets better for the rest of you guys soon like predicted.
