Quote: If your rice reaches the el dente or what ever texture you like, it is ok to pour off the extra water. Give that to the chickens. I ealize this is pouring off the added vitamins that are usually added to white rice, but it will help you figure out how much water to use, length of time and the temp on the stove. HOnestly I don't get it right each time either. But we don't serve rice anymore so I"m saved!

THe artic cold is here. THe overnight snow is light and fluffy and a stiff broom works wonders. Swept my way to each coop. NO chickens are coming out. I lifted the plywood that when lifted reveals bare ground for the ducks to sit on. . . . . and while walking kids to bus stop one duck was in the runoff swale standing in the frigid water.

It was cold here this morning, 23 degrees. It is going to be another cold week but about 10 degrees warmer than last week.

Yay! What chickens do you have? Mine are some elderly ladies who are still actually producing really good. Just started laying again and I am getting 3-4 eggs a day from 6 hens. I have a Wyandotte(?), a couple of brown sex links and a RIR and a RIR rooster. I am going to keep these, but add lavender orpingtons this spring, and grow out 50 freedom rangers. There is a produce stand here that is waiting for me to start selling eggs to them, but it seems the lavenders are worth much more sold as fertile hatching eggs or chicks...not sure which direction I want to take this. Any suggestions? There is a poultry "get together" most weekends during the warmer months where you can sell chicks or adults. I am not sure what got me on to the lavender orpingtons, but I am getting pretty obsessive :) We have had buffs in the past and they do really well. Getting excited~
