The Old Folks Home

Sadly, some of them really do have valuable information to import, but they manage to be so offensive in the process that those who could learn from them often shut down and leave before they hear it.
THe Heritage thread is all that and more-- I took a few beatings when I started on that thread, and now I know my place and I am finally accepted. Sort of. I met Walt at the NECP and he was really nice-- and kindly added to my poultry education.

Sit and listen -----lots to pick up on that thread. I do like the o ther thread Hellbender started on eggs and meat production manybe becsue that is more my interest.

I do think that dedicating yourself to breeding true heritage breeds can be a noble cause but if it comes to being snarky at other people about your "purebreds", then it might be time to remember they are only chickens. No one outside the world of chickens is going to care if you raise blue ribbon striped egg layers. ;) It is pretty much the same no matter what you are talking about, dogs, horses, model airplanes. You get out of that niche and no one knows your name. Perspective can be a wonderful thing and I like having chickens just enough to like my barnyard mutts. ;)
Hear, hear!

I've been called mean and a bully on other threads here. All I did was answer a person's questions as honestly as I knew how. It apparently offended their sensibilities or conflicted with what they wanted to hear. Others on the same threads couldn't see what I said that was offensive. I figure, if you don't want a real answer, don't ask the question.
I've since been able to decipher and ferret out the threads where the person wasn't able to handle the truth and I leave them alone.

Honesty is best. I was watching Idol the other night and was wondering why someone hadn't told some of these children years ago that they couldn't sing. I'd hate to ask a question and have someone agree with me just so as not to hurt my feelings, I wouldn't learn a thing. What I dislike more is when I post a question and noone answers at all. I don't think I've ever seen you be a bully, canoe, at least not on any threads I've been reading. You seem quite sensible and gracious. I do, however, get some cute mental images whenever I see your name, though.

What? You mean like I float down the river with my chickens?
Never.
I guess this would be where I should explain my screen name. I've been an avid canoeist most of my life. I prefer small mountain and whitewater streams too small for any other craft. That way, I'm usually alone. I really avoid most large rivers.
I had just finished a job that I hated in KC and at the same time I learned about the world's longest non-stop canoe race from KC Kansas to St. Charles, MO. 340 miles on the Missouri River. I thought, 'what a better way to return home from a dreadful job than by canoe." So that's how I came home. Blistering heat and headwinds cause half the competitors to drop out. By the end I was hallucinating like crazy. All the trees at night looked like cartoon characters from my childhood. A year later I had just finished building a chicken tractor when I joined BYC. Searching for a screen name I thought, tractor, canoe - they're not all that different.

Back to an old subject......When is winter going to END! DH got here on Friday (sick of course) and had to shuffle back already to SC because of the pending snow/ice down there.

He had to get back because he was not sure the people tending the chickens would be able to continue if roads get bad....Unlike up north, they do not have equipment to treat or clean roads. They are also concerned about possible power outages. Enough ALREADY. We are getting cold again tonight and tomorrow in the Mid-Atlantic. The wind started to pick-up earlier this afternoon.

I am on a thread that is about processing support for those that have trouble processing chickens.

We sometimes get a post or two from Vegans. Honestly, There is not a nice way to dispatch a chicken if you are opposed to eating meat.

We really did appreciate your great advice on the NYD hatch a long thread. A lot of them had much better hatch rates because of the great posts from you there.

My DH's cousin is vegan and on my facebook. One day she pmed me and very politely asked if if could leave images and references to eating my chickens off my page, because, while she admires the fact that I am eating my own as opposed to supporting major industries it upset her to see it. I understood where she was coming from and started my chicken diary page so that others in my family who follow my adventures with chickens could still read about them. It worked out for us both and I love having my little blog. If someone is vegan, why would they want to go to a thread about eating chickens? Had a friend once tell me(during playoffs, no less!) that he hated basketball, football is soooo much better, blah blah blah. I just told him "Honey, when you are at your home you can watch whatever you please, but if you just want to complain about basketball then don't come to my house during the dang playoffs!"

I saw pictures from the Howard County mall shooting (an area I'm very familiar with) and was shocked that those pictures could have been taken in Maine. Icy, snowy, blah.

Your weather has really stunk this winter compared to winter's past. It's one thing to get a lot of snow and cold in new england and in the midwest, but it's another to have it sustained in the mid atlantic.

Like you said, we're at least prepared for it. It still stinks, but it's not uncommon.

To be fair, the thread is devoted to the SOP. I"ve encountered most everyone on other threads, and it is because they have chickens for meat and eggs too, and often several mutts. Bob often poked fun at himself as he would sign off as needing to feed MR. Silkie. THe thread is SOP in nature.

Temps soared from 22 to 42by 10 am. As the sun was going down the artic air moved in again and tomorrow will start at 5 degrees.

I can't take this any longer!!!!
