The Old Folks Home

Congrats on the chicks oz. I bought an incubator, and reptile thermometer/hygrometer, then set 6 eggs. I hope to have some Black Australorp chicks eventually, if I didn't screw anything up. My daughter has hatched plenty of eggs, but this is my first time. It's like being an expectant mother all over again minus the morning sickness, and weight gain. WAIT! Am I eating for 7 now?
there is an article linked in my signature area called hatching 101.

its a good read for a noob hatcher

good luck. dont hesitate to ask for help. there are a few hatchers here

Have you checked out the hatch a longs? Easter is setting the end of March. And of course our own Cinco De Mayo Turkey Hatch a Long(you can hatch chickens and other poultry too.)

I went into one of my favorite hardware stores today. They had recently expanded into carrying horse supplies, and my usual source is currently out of hay. I'm afraid I never got to ask about the hay - I had to get out of there, QUICK! They had cheepies!

i cant believe how "sweet" you all are......

shucks

They're sickeningly sweet, aren't they?

I realized quickly that I had to tone things way down when I joined the site.
Also, I discovered the site was saturated with women.
Not that that's a bad thing. (Seinfeld)

HELP!!!!!!!!

Congratulations.
My local feed store got chicks last year at my urging to see if they got any customers. They ran out and had to get chicks from their sister store 20 miles away.

This year they got 300. Today is chick day there but they had already sold 100 by Wednesday when I went to check on them and told myself that my coops were at or near capacity.
I'll bet they're nearly sold out by now and their day is only half over.

oz, I checked out hatching 101, and read a lot before starting. The incubator is on a desk in my breakfast nook. I'm in Florida, so it's very warm here. I keep the house at 74 degrees, but the incubator seems to be holding temp fine. It's also very humid here all year long. I discovered I can't fill the channels all the way with water. Humidity climbed to 90%. The way I discovered that was because my hygrometer bottomed out, lines only for the reading. When I took off the lid, I felt there was humidity in there, but filled the channels. Still got a - - - - reading. I took the battery out, reset it, and humidiy began working, and climbing. Within an hour I was way on up there, so I took out the extra plug, and removed a bit of water. It took a few hours for it to go back down. I haven't had any trouble since then, but I will be getting a new battery for it on Friday. Now, I fill the channels about half, and keep it between 38 - 45%. I put a little food coloring in the water before I add it, so I can see the levels better. It makes it much easier on the eyes.

I have lurked a bit on the hatch-a-longs.

Since I am getting eggs sporadically, I am considering making a hatcher for lockdown, but I want to see how this goes before modifying anything yet.

There's another feed/hardware store near here that gets 100 each of two different varieties of chicks on Wednesdays through most of the Spring months. The breeds vary; Ameraucanas (I reckon these are really EE's) are pretty popular. A couple of years ago, they sold out of the Ameraucana chicks in one shipment in the first minute after they came in!

I find weighing eggs periodically to be the best way to check appropriate humidity for the eggs I'm hatching.

You are off to a great start!

BAs are very cute when they hatch too.
When I had BAs, I had so much trouble telling growing birds of BAs and Black Penes apart that if I didn't leg band I had to go by how they behaved. The BAs would hunker down together.
Birds of a feather......
