Woodland and Pine Forests were burned by farmers through the 50s to let the grass grow for grazing and to prevent large forest fires. They would wait for the right conditions with enough moisture and the wind from the right direction so the fire would burn slowly against the wind.

We used to do it on our farm. It was amazing how the grass would grow a week or so after the underbrush was burned. We didn't take out a mature tree but it kept the scrub oak and eastern redcedar at bay.
