The Old Folks Home

My little window A/C unit - set to TRY to keep the living room at or below 78 degrees - was working until after midnight.... It doesn't cool down all that much at night up here in the Foothills.

My adult cat, Lizbeth, almost started to play with the new kitten this morning. But then she "remembered" she didn't like it and hissed as it ran up to her. Poor baby, it skidded to a stop and tried to go into reverse on the wood laminate floor. Lizbeth stalked away whilst the kitten found the closest spot in which to cower.

Two seconds later, it saw me and rushed to get some loves.

I bet Lizbeth will be playing with it by the end of the day. She has finally forgiven me for bringing it home more than a week ago; I can now pet her and scratch under her chin without drawing back a wounded hand. However, that kitten better not be in my lap when SHE wants to sit there.

Cats are so funny!

Often the older ones begin acting like a kitten again around a new kitten.

Cats are such funny creatures. I got a new cat probably 6 years ago and they're still not friends. They tolerate each other, sure. In the winter they might even nap next to each other for warmth. Occasionally I catch them grooming each other. And then there's days when they try to kill each other. They had an all-out brawl a couple nights ago that woke us up, we had to separate them.

Hope yours become fast friends, soon.

Quote: Thank Lacey. We are building gates today. I was going to do a metal roof but I over spent on birds instead of 300-500 I have spend nearly 700. and still waiting on one of my breeding trio's for another 125.. So we had to compromise this year.
lol But the birds love them and so do I.
I thought after posting this that it might sound like I was bragging about the money. I am so sorry! I was not, I am still in shock over the prices and shipping.

Talk about looking like an idiot. I ordered an orange big sun hat to keep the sun off my head and back of my neck. I got brave enough to wear it today while I was raking grass clippings. I have to do it when I can and it was hot at 1pm. I didn't wear it around the chickens because I think they would have gone into shock.

No I don't have a camera and will not take pictures of me wearing it. I think I lucked out and nobody was around.

I've constantly got one eye on the sky - maybe I can pray some of our rain Ron's way?

Could you put me on that list too please? I live maybe 5 or 6 hours east of Ron, though I've never been there... I'm guessing at the amount of road time between us. The rain we got the other night was just wonderful but it didn't last long at all. Not even enough to register in the rain gauge (probably).

One of the things I LOVE about living here is the temperature swings we get between day and night. We're in the low hundreds today, tonight will probably be in the mid 60s. We open up the windows after the sun goes down and turn the swamp cooler to just the vent fan and it is so nice. Fans inside the house are almost never turned off but blow directly on us at night. This morning, early, our power went out for about 20 minutes or so before I actually got up... meaning my fan wasn't keeping me cool. It wasn't hot in the house, it's just my time of life I think. Before it came back on, I could feel sweat running! Ugh! Did I say I HATE SUMMER?

No, you didn't sound like you were bragging. With my hoop coop, I was able to repurpose just the base wood from deck wood I collected last summer. I intend to make a proper roof on my barn - SOON - but I need to get some plywood first. I repurpose where I can. My hoop coop cost me around $500 or so and it is 8' x 21'. It's 21' because I used 5 cattle panels that were 50" tall and that's just what it came out to. I have the inside divided. The back 4x8 section is for little chicks. The rest of it is divided down the middle for boys and girls so their spaces are 4 x 17.

It's time to cull chicks. I have a bunch more in the house that need to go outside before they start eating each other alive. Cannibals!

I planted the tree this morning, of course I had to remove the tree that did not survive moving last winter. It was an Apricot tree that was planted before it was decided that a shed needed to be built close to the tree. It is nice having the dead tree replaced with a live tree!

I needed to get the work done before we hit triple digits today. We will have above normal Temperatures for today but not at record temps. Normal for today is 94 for a high. The record is 109 and the forecast is 104 today and 106 tomorrow....Time to turn the mister to auto!
am I wrong in thinking I'm making my life easier by letting the chickens "tough it out" for the most part? I make sure they have plenty of cool water to drink and lots of shade trees. I kind of feel like, if they are going to survive here, they need to be able to survive here...does that make sense? Kind of like in the winter time, If you put a heat lamp out for your birds, they don't grow the thick down to help insulate them from the cold, so they aren't properly prepared for it.
It's not like it's ever going to be cooler in the summer on a regular basis here.

That's how I raise my birds (to survive winter). I don't use a heat lamp for longer than 2 weeks, and often my birds go outside in the dead of winter at 4 to 6 weeks. They get high protein food when hatched and grow their feathers in rapidly.

I hate to say it but it is raining here. It suddenly feels wonderful. No more swampy body - and with a bonus of not having to water the garden tonight!

I got a lot done today and still 2 hours before bed! This is the way Sundays should be.

I feel this way completely. I breed some nice chickens. I want them to be good sturdy survivors for our area no matter how rare the breed. I don't raise and sell wimps that won't survive in our Texas weather.
