I don't remember any direct breaks in "The Princess Bride," it's mostly the tone of the movie. It's like the movie knows that deep down, it's a sappy, sentimental fairy tale, and is a bit embarrassed about it. "Yup, this is silly, but here I go, anyway."![]()
I have only watched two Steve Martin movies - "Roxanne" and "All of Me." I enjoyed his performance in both of them. I've seen trailers and reviews of some of the others, and my feeling just from the snips was, "can we stop, now?" Not funny, just painful - but maybe if I saw those bits in context, it would work better.
I think what's most fun about "The Princess Bride" for me, is that the movie spends the entire time pressed up against the fourth wall. The "story within a story" format felt a little weird the first time I saw it, but I got over it by the third or fourth time.![]()
