The Old Folks Home

Wow I need to get on more often 4758 new posts since I was last on lol! So big question, My Hens are loosing feathers on their backs and the tips of their tail feathers are bare, is it mites or is my male aggressive? If it is mites what is a home cure? They dust bathe regularly.

Maybe I took that pic in your house........mwuhahahah!

TOMATO TIME!!

This is the biggest one I have so far. It's huge!

There is actually another one almost as large behind it.

I think the variety is 'Park's Whopper' but I'm not positive.

More Whoppers.

Notice that these are different and the vines are about spent? I think these are 'Early Girl' and I planted them late (mid June.) These are just starting to turn red, but they are the ones I fried green and they were delicious,

Here is that biggest one with a regulation size baseball tucked in above it for comparison.
Your maters look so good Wisher!

It is probably the effects of a summer of breeding. I have a few hens like this as well even though my hen to rooster number is fine. They just seem to have a few "favorites" that receive more love. ;) They will probably go into a molt soon so they will grow new feathers and cover those bare areas.

If they are over a year old, then they are likely molting.

You can see mites and lice.

Thank you for answering. I thought I had some kind of horrible disease runnin a muck or fixin to spend hours on disinfecting a coop lol. My ratio is one rooster to 8 hens but I just put the bantams in with the bigger chickens and my three bantam roosters are trying to have a little fun to.

The first molt is shocking!

There is even a photo contest on here each fall to winter to show off the worst looking chickens.

I can pick up hand fulls of feathers at my place now. Some of them are looking very nice already though.
