The Old Folks Home

I'm afraid to ask what super cold is??? I wish you guys could find a nice peaceful, secluded area that has nicer weather. There must be somewhere, more temperate. I worry about you guys

.

We had a record breaking winter - 3rd.snowiest since records were kept, longest below freezing spell, longest below zero spell, etc. etc. I was shoveling every day - I really love shoveling if I can take my time. I still finish before the neighbors with snow blowers because they have to walk slowly or have them choke up. Just gets to the point there is no where to stack the snow - I'm almost 5' tall and can't throw it very high. But we have close neighbors and the village plow comes through as needed and dumps all the snow at the foot of the driveway. The road ends in our driveway but, they said they can't maneuver the curve with the big plow. We are at the end of dead end street.,even when there is only a few inches of snow , by the time he reaches the end of the block - he has quite a pile to leave for me.

We came from Chicago, so even though there are 8 houses on our block - it seems out in the country to us. Plus our village is mostly forest preserve . The main roads are usually pretty clear/salted by early morning so you can get out if you feel like it. I'm old so hibernate, meaning sleeping most of the day.,about 9-10 mos. of the year - hate summer (too hot). Some years we skip spring but, fall is pretty nice. Don't mind winter except for ice/slippery -awful. I keep better with refrigeration.

Have you every considered areas in Washington, or thereabouts? Still seems to be a lot of places with the seclusion you crave and actual growing seasons and stuff.

@drumstick diva about shoveling when the berm is taller than you are!

One year I watched my kids shoveling, and they were shorter than the berm. The one kid, would get a shovel full of snow, try to toss it out of the path, maybe half would fall back onto the path, and half would get off of the path and on the berm. Poor kids!!! I think a bunch kept falling down his neck. Anyway, I was plowing, so kept on plowing.

Personally, I think that super cold is -30 and colder. What always gets me, is the people that live where they are happy with -30, because it often hits -60. That is all sorts of wrong and crazy in my book! It shouldn't be a winter sport to toss out a cup of water so that you can see it vaporize. And keeping your car battery with you in the house is too rustic for me.

And even though I do at times fantasize about living in other places.... the spouse said that there will be no moving ever again.... so, I guess it just isn't gonna happen.

I would like to move, except that my chicken complex is coming along nicely! It will soon be so nice that even I won't want to move!

@Alaskan I started looking at Homer on Google maps, you have some funny streetnames. In the midst of Fairview, Soundview, Spruceview and Rangeview Ave:s, there's also Noview Ave. Hidden Way sounds funny too. Homer Spit campground doesn't sound too welcoming though, and it looks like it's pretty exposed. And is that a coal dumping port next to it?

Speaking of coconuts.

We produce enough copra to mill into about two tons of oil each year.

I have plans for a press to make cold pressed virgin coco oil but no time to initiate it.

We do produce oil at home by grating ripe coconut then using heat to separate the oil. The non oil liquid is used as coconut milk for Asian dishes. The oil is heated to just about 105f then used as a hair and scalp spa treatment.

Bernie ran up a tree this lunch time and gently lowered a dozen young coconuts. Jun opened them and Mrs Oz scraped out the snotty flesh. The coconut juice and flesh is mixed with powdered skim milk and placed in cylindrical plastic bags about one inch around and seven inches long.

150 of these 'agogo' then went into the freezer for healthy Popsicles.

During mango season we do the same with blended mangoes.

Delurking to comment on some older posts:

Not all cat owners are irresponsible. I have two cats, both indoor cats but who have an outside, totally enclosed run which is both safe for them and the local wildlife. While many break the laws, we are only allowed two cats and they must be registered with the local Council.

PS. They have leashes and walk not drag

With regards weeds. My gals keep the weeds under control. In the areas they do not have access to, front path and driveway etc, I use a mixture of vinegar, salt and dishwashing detergent. Kills them dead!

Vinegar alone will also work.

Will that work on an unwanted stump?

We're getting cold winds from Siberia, it should chill down below freezing tonight. So I need to change tires tonight

Then the weather should heat up after the weekend again, annoying weather.
