The Old Folks Home

I tend to stick in the 10-15 € range, usually you get pretty good stuff for that price.

I buy my wine in the box....

but back when I was making good money I rarely paid more than ten bucks for a bottle. I love wine I guess I am not a connesure....

BUT Once I did get a taste....

It was around 82 or 83I went to the local Liquor store for a bottle of wine and I was AGAIN celebrating New Years alone. So I ws doing a scallop stir fry but I wanted a bottle of Cabernet.

I saw one on the top shelf that had 12 bucks on it.... so I had the clerk get it down... It had some sediment in the bottom so I figured it had gotten too hot or something because the wines on either side of it were going for 70 or 80 bucks a piece. So I thought What the heck.....

I have to say I did open it and let it breathe and poured a glass while I was cooking. Oh my it was smooth and aeromatic and just yummy.... It was good with the Scallops and with the movie I rented too. Finished it off that evening.

When I went back by the liquor store the next couple of days the clerk zoomed to the back room and brought out the owner.... Who was a very nice Italian man... I hear you bought one of our nice wines the other night... Oh yes I said it was very good. "I am glad because My SON turning to the clerk.... missed a decimal point on that bottle.... That wine was supposed to be sold for 120 dollars.

at first I was afraid he was going to try to get me to pay the balance... but he just wanted to know how I liked the wine and I think he wanted to know I treated it right not mixing it in some punch or making wine coolers with it.... Shudder.

"No I had a little before dinner more with dinner and finished the evening with it. it was very special I realized that the moment i tasted it. " He looked greatly releaved.

I now Know that the sediment in the bottom of the bottle is something called Beeswings.... evidence of aging.
I still have the bottle somewhere....

Take into consideration that Finnish alcohol taxation is built on the fact that the stereotype of our alcohol consumption is pretty accurate. I'm guessing a 10-15 euro bottle would be about 10-15 dollars. Of course, European wines probably travel to Finland for a smaller cost than they do to the States.

That sounds like a sweet score, Deb. (Almost called you Den again).

similiar range. there are plenty of good wines at that price point.

my best wines were mostly gifts. but before the expense of adoptions came along, I allowed myself a present once every month or two

I scored some great 90 point red wine from washington years ago for 9 bucks at costco

I bought 6 cases of it and served it at my parties for a couple of years

with the weather in the phils, whites are more enjoyable I have been drinking some good South African wines

Back around the same time I had that nice bottle of wine... the Austrailian wines started hitting the market here... A dollar a bottle... I bought one to see what it was like and HO BOY it was very good a young wine but my goodness.... I went back the next day to buy a couple of cases and someone had bought EVERY bottle.... This was a place called Liquor barn. I kick myself for not grabbing a case at the time.

That would describe me pretty well on a sunny day in February too. I always forget to wear sunscreen in spring - that's when you get burned the easiest, because the snow reflects about 80-90% of the light so you're getting pounded from two directions.

I am just reading up on this and found an found the Top 3 reasons why you should be eating lard! Oh my goodness! At least we have two stores here that we can buy a hunk of lard from and we have been trying to eat healthy and still not loosing any weight to mention we are still hungry and look for snacks an hour after we eat. And we are cooking every day. I have been baking my meat for over 20 yrs. Now I will fry, fry, fry! And try a new approach!

Which was the old one to begin with.

Our schools have been causing obesity in our children for years because they cannot afford healthy food to feed our children and that is so sad! I fought with them like crazy over the junk they were feeding my children!

chicka, if you want a healthier diet, cut down on meat and add vegetables, and try to avoid carb heavy stuff, such as bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. Carrots and broccoli are your friends. Fish is great too. Steaming veggies is better than boiling them.
