Potato skins are only poisonous when they have been exposed to the sun and they have turned green. Even then I don't believe they will hurt anything.

Potatoes have selenium in them with more of a concentration in the skins. It is a necessary micro nutrient but too much is bad. I agree, it would likely take a lot to hurt the chickens. I give them potato skins that are not green. Green skin contains solanine(thanks Oz) which is a toxin from nite shade plants. It comes from old potatoes that are in the sun. Potatoes should be tossed if the skins are green.

for what its worth.... In the wild animals do self medicate. I have heard of horses with severe gastric distress searched out a small weed growing just outside the barn. Smart weed. She would only eat that for a day or two. Her distress went away. The woman with the horse looked the weed up.... and Yes its called Smart weed.

Even a field with Loco weed in it Which is deadly to horses.... They would taste it then leave it alone unless they are very hungry.

Also in the wild horses will have a huge worm load. Yet same horse sampled a month or two later will have a minimal count. They are eating something that flushes em out.

I Would suspect chickens goats sheep.... would do the same if left to their own devices....

Where we get into trouble is when everything is confined, controlled, consistent.... Birds in spaces that are deemed healthy yet in the wild they would be covering acres gathering food.

Apples and tomatoes and oranges and onions... they will only eat a small portion.

i think the correct toxin you are refering to is solanine.

I had 17 compound fractures. Crushed from the waist down.
I have had more doctors than I can remember.
Most of them were great. I despise physical therapists. I think they are all involved in an insurance scheme. That is the most pointless profession.
