The Old Folks Home

Thanks. The whole house is covered in them with beds. Every couple years I have to pay someone to rebuild them due to all the heaving from winter. There's also old rock walls that denote the old property boundaries all in the woods and in front of the house. There's so many rocks up here there's not much else you can do but try to use them.
Here is a fellow who is amazing with Dry stacked stone and the husband of a very good friend.

Ok, no bear could be that good at lifting.

I also love the rock wall!

But can you see Russia?

I've not had a pleasant evening. My phoenix, Runty, was killed today and dragged partially through the fence. She was blind in one eye. We never saw anything. Then I discovered that someone stole my rouge vif d'etampes pumpkin that I had grown from a seed right off my rock wall near the house. I live in the middle of nowhere. WHO STEALS A PUMPKIN???

Is it crazy to want to drive around the area really slow looking to see if I can locate it? BF seems to think it was FedEx and not the neighbor kids. I'm voting for the nasty kids. A few years ago I called the cops on them because they were shooting my chickens with bb guns while I was at work (and they were supposed to be in school). I have put up signs stating my property is private, etc, but I do catch them on my property from time to time, still.

Wisher, will the police take a report of a stolen pumpkin??
Sorry to hear about the bird.

Pumpkins are really expensive this year.

You can see a volcano from most parts of Costa Rica but not Russia. What you can see on a clear day from the crater rim of the Irazu volcano is the Atlantic and Pacific from the same point.
I live on a dead end road, too, Ron, and you can't see my pumpkin from the road.

Kids or delivery guy.

Not sure what got the bird. She was pushed up against the fence and it had eaten her butt off, and then ripped into the insides from the vent. Not pretty.

I didn't do the birds the last 2 days due to class and working late, BF did, so I don't know when it happened. She didn't have rigor so either Thursday or just a bit before I found her. I'm guessing today because she was otherwise unharmed, you'd think the other chickens would have scavenged.
Sounds like a raccoon.

morning everyone. crispy 15o so I am just cruisin' BYC. Hope you all are having a great autumn!

It was supposed to drop to 30 this morning so I covered and brought in plants. It only got down to 39.

Pics are blurry cause I can't get my camera to turn on and I can't get the hang of this new phone.
Yesterday's dinner from the grill. Kabobs with chicken, Andouille sausage, hot chilies, onions, zucchini, mushrooms.

Homemade mac&cheese with white cheddar, muenster and gruyere

Our local chicken group is having a potluck picnic at Lone Elk Park (Lots of elk, deer and bison in the park roaming free you can see from the car)
This is my contribution.
6 month old Black Penedesenca cockerel roasted with organic fennel, carrots, parsnips, shallots, Yukon gold potatoes, leek, garlic, fresh rosemary and purple basil, kosher and sea salt, cracked black pepper.
The picnic is at noon. I started cooking at 6 AM with the bird breast up at 450F for 25 minutes to brown it. Then put the veggies in with the breast down in broth at 230F for the rest of the morning.

I planned to bake a couple pumpkin pies from real pie pumpkins but I forgot I don't have enough eggs. I'm trying to fill orders for hatching eggs.

The Black Penedesenca is famous in Spain for its flavor. They have their own festival Fira del Gall (fair of the rooster) in the Penedesenca region of the Catalonian state.
It's a big foodie event with all types of poultry and wine. Catalonia is the oldest wine region of Europe. The star of the show though is the Black Pene rooster. Area restaurants compete with their own unique preparations of the bird. The festival is the last weekend before Christmas and there are always 1000 of these roosters that people select from pens and have them processed on the spot. The birds are $50 and that's what many use for their Christmas dinner.

Very cool fire pit.

I dug up an old well on my property that was lined with limestone. I used it to put a stone veneer on the foundation of my back porch which was cinder block. Now it matches the house foundation which is solid limestone.
I used all the remaining stone to line the rain garden stream that runs from my downspout that carries over 80% of the water that falls on the house.

Looks great!
I have a Pita Pinta in the fridge ready to cook. They have a good reputation for flavor too.

On my list for today is putting a roof up on one of my runs. I hope I get to it!

Every year at the festival they feature another breed besides the Black Pene. I think it was the 30 year anniversary of the fair that they featured the Pita Pinta.

Pita Pinta is my favorite. I was not very impressed with Bresse and was very surprised by how good the Trader Joes cockerels turned out. They are similar to Austra whites. The Rooter is a brown hybrid and the hens area white hybrid type of leghorn. They were fairly large and my DW said the flavor reminded her of a turkey for the dark meat.

I plan on trying some Black Penedesenca next spring. Jason has some now.

Do you know how many he has? I desperately need another line. I was doing fine till the mink set me back at least 2 years.

I think I have a way to get some eggs from Spain. My daughter is going to Costa Rica after the first of the year and I've been hunting for them there. They are supposed to be scattered around Latin America. I know for sure they're in Argentina and Chile but someone reported they were in Central America.
