Rats are smart little suckers. In order to get the ones I have, I bate the traps and leave them unset for about 4 days. on the 5th day I set the trap and SNAP! I also put the traps inside a coffee can or some other small boxie thing so the Ladies do not get caught up in them.

If you are looking to hunt them airsoft with FROZEN gel bullets work on smaller rats and mice.

5 gallon bucket traps baited with peanut butter work well.
I use fruit stripe chewing gum to bait snap traps in my shed. They cant stay away from it.

Both excellent ideas, thank you. I have never caught a rat in a snap trap. I've caught them in the buckets, the have a hearts and shot them. The pellet guns don't seem to take them down, have to use a 22.
