The Old Folks Home

I learned then about the importance of preparedness. It doesn't have to be a big disaster. Even a small one can cause it's own share of headaches.

Far too many nowadays seem to think that having more than a week to a week and a half of food, and supplies is the equivalent of "hoarding", yet even in a small disaster, are totally unprepared.

A tree in my parents neighborhood fell and didn't damage the power lines, it kind of bounced off and hit the ground so no one really knew that it had hit the lines (as it wasn't on them when it was found), but, what it had done is yanked the ground wire loose and sent high voltage power through my parents house, it was creepy, we weren't home when it happened, so we got home and turned on the light, it burned for about a second and exploded, ok, weird, so we went to the next room and turned on the light, same thing... after about 3 lights we realized that it wasn't a weird fluke and that there was something horribly wrong. The only light in the house that could handle the voltage was a night light and it was like sunlight in there, it burned so hot that it melted the plastic thing around the bulb... It killed the electronics in the stove and microwave, the freezer had an ice maker that started screaming for some reason, the TV's were fried.... the laptops were ok, but if they had been plugged in for much longer the little transformer boxes on them probably would have started a fire....

Luckily, homeowners insurance covered it all, any item under $500 they would replace no questions asked, just had to save the receipts, major appliances like the freezer and stove had to go to an appliance repair place to be assessed.

That's because the birds are smart!! Lol, I wouldn't mind taking one of the Alaska cruises but that's about it. I would go nuts on a normal cruise but my understanding is that the ones in Alaska generally stay close enough to land to see the shore the whole time.

I've heard that about ducks as well, that their poop actually seals the bottom of the pond.
I have a spring fed pond on my farm that we are going to dig out deeper (I would love the middle to be around 6-7 feet deep so the horses can swim) and I want to get some Muscovy ducks, I know Muscovy's are tree ducks, but they do swim, and I think they should help seal the pond and keep it from draining out.

Yes, Alaska in the summer is fantastic.

Winters are great for 3 weeks. ... then should go away.

Muscovys are excellent! ! Get a line with good kind drakes that help parent and protect. (some breeders don't breed for drake personality, and do not flock breed)

Working on the siding again. View attachment 1142811

That is a really great looking coop.

Thanks, i love the cedar. Going for more siding tomorrow. $25 for a pick up truck full, which is a steal if you ask me.

Your coop is very nice looking.

Now that ours is empty we will use it for a work shop once we get it over hauled inside. I wish we could move it closer to the house. But we built it in pallets we screwed together and it's not able to be moved.
Thanks, i have been working on it for a long time! It will probably weigh a ton by the time i finish it. That cedar siding is heavy!

I have heard that...but for whatever reason always find that odd.

That some fly all of the way to Alaska to breed.. and some stay in Florida.

Do y'alls look the same? rusty color with a red cap?

My avatar is a photo I took of a crane at my house.
We get mostly the same Sandhill cranes as you do however, occasionally we get to see the endangered Whooping cranes too. The International Crane Foundation is outside Baraboo WI to our south and they have been having great success with reintroducing them to the wild thru their breeding program.
