The Old Folks Home

Far too many nowadays seem to think that having more than a week to a week and a half of food, and supplies is the equivalent of "hoarding", yet even in a small disaster, are totally unprepared.
I think having enough food for six months to a year is a very good idea... Gotto rotate it though through your regular pantry. rice and beans are easy..... five gallon tub fill it with the rice or beans then pour in nitrogen to protect it... Nitrogen is heavier than oxygen and will displace it... You can use Carbon dioxide too Drop in a chunk of dry ice and it will evaporate.... Carbon dioxide is heavier than air and it too will displace the oxygen. Great part about this is you can open the bin and carefully scoop out what you need...

Water too but also having a really good filter is a big help... Having a cistern full and cycling your drinking water out of that.

There was a Sandhill Crane breeding area near where I lived back in IL before I met my husband. Beautiful creatures. Here we have a lot of Blue Herons. One hung around our larger pond for a week or two this summer before moving on.

It's amazing to be near one when it takes to the air. The first time I spooked one I almost had to go back to the house for clean pants;)

We get Blue and White Herons here .... Love how they park in a strip of greeen and freeze... waiting for a gopher to pop up... All the while saying... "I'm a stick.... Just a stick" while incrementally retracting that neck for a strike...

Then its strike shake and toss back...

I hate herons. They killed several of the koi i raised from small fish. They had the whole ocean to fish in and they have to go in my back yard that is surrounded by privacy fence and kill my fish.

I had feral cats do the same thing to Koi I'd raised.:duc

I had Herons spear fish that were too big for them to swallow, and then leave them there to die. I buried that one and the next day it was on the ground by the pond! Apparently a racoon dug it up and took it there to try and wash it. Then the dog probably chased it off. I got to cry and bury that fish twice.

In pond design its possible to cover with wire netting to protect from preditors

I had netting but they can still stick their beaks in there. Or poke around the edges. My pond was 14x14 and so was the net. I had a deep end but the fish don't spend every minute there.
