I think having enough food for six months to a year is a very good idea... Gotto rotate it though through your regular pantry. rice and beans are easy..... five gallon tub fill it with the rice or beans then pour in nitrogen to protect it... Nitrogen is heavier than oxygen and will displace it... You can use Carbon dioxide too Drop in a chunk of dry ice and it will evaporate.... Carbon dioxide is heavier than air and it too will displace the oxygen. Great part about this is you can open the bin and carefully scoop out what you need...Far too many nowadays seem to think that having more than a week to a week and a half of food, and supplies is the equivalent of "hoarding", yet even in a small disaster, are totally unprepared.
Water too but also having a really good filter is a big help... Having a cistern full and cycling your drinking water out of that.
