The Old Folks Home

With this cold weather coming I decided yesterday was the day to dig up the mammoth red mangel beets.
Each coop got a wheelbarrow full of tops and small beets. Filled a half a 55gal barrel in the cellar with just the bigger roots. Guess I exaggerated a little on the football size but some of them still got pretty big.
Give the chickens something to peck at this winter.
Not bad for a $2 package of seed and not thinning them out and not keeping them weeded, the weeds choked them out this summer at one point.
Next yr I'm planting more and taking better care of them, supposed to get up to 20lbs ea.

Good "crunchy" morning all! winter_smilies_0012.gif
yesterday was just insane with single digits, snow and 30 mph winds. This morning is still -6 F (but rising quickly, was -10 earlier) but no wind. Sun is also out so maybe things will warm up at least in the greenhouse before the next line of snow moves in later.
I must confess I am way too far behind (and not knowledgeable enough) to comment on most conversations other than to wish Micro a quick healing on her toe, ouch! Oh, except this; want to feel like a zoo keeper? Try being a female security supervisor of a bunch of male security guards, none of which had any background in law or security and many were out of work loggers or tribal members who had never held any structured job before. That was the position I was foolish enough to get talked into taking when I moved to the northwoods in the early 90's.

Very nice beets, @Beer can. What variety are they?

As for being what I used to call a supervisor, I hear ya. I did the charge nurse route for about a year once and it was about the worst year of my career as I where I worked, the charge nurse also worked the floor like the other nurses plus was the supervisor for that shift. The nurses were never much of a problem other than one occasionally not showing up for a shift, most took their responsibilities seriously but as stated, the work code of the younger generation of CNA's left something to be desired. The hardest thing to do was fire one but yep, did it once without hesitation and regret. But it wasn't unusual to have one go on break and never come back again.

We have friends who own a large business in IL and their biggest problem is getting the employees to work when they bother to show up in the first place. It is a farm centered business, the work is hard but they are fair employers and treat their workers well. People just do not want to work these days but want to reap the benefits of their jobs.

We gave up on employees on our business when one office manager stole 40,000 dollars from us, siphoning off all the cash people used to pay their bills. She even stole from the town's police chief who always paid his bill with cash, and then did and identity theft on my husband, took out a credit card in his name and continued to use it while she was under investigation for the embezzlement charges by the state police. It was a mess. She eventually plea bargained when she was told she would go to prison and basically got a slap on the wrist. She is paying us back the almost 50,000 dollars she stole from us on a monthly basis. Sometimes we get 50$ sometimes 100$ a month when she was stealing 1000 to 1500 dollars from us in cash every month. We have to live to be in our 90s to see it all repaid to us. We intend to live that long to see it happen.

There is no justice some times. And yes it happens more times in businesses than you can imagine.

Thanks, @chickisoup and everyone else for the well wishes.

The toe is continuing to turn real pretty unnatural colors this morning, LOL and I'm trying to figure out what shoes I can put on to let the birds out this morning once the temps come up. It isn't bothering me too much unless I try to wear shoes or tight socks so I'm running around the house with naked feet.

The temps here were down in the middle teens this morning and the wind is blowing so I'm waiting for the temp to come up to at least 30 before I release the feather brains. It's 24 now so hopefully by 10 AM. I imagine they are ready to chew through a wall now. I just looked at the forecast for next week and we are looking at temps in the 50s for highs and more reasonable lows for this time of the year.

Tomorrow is opening day of deer season here. I just told DH that if the temps are like this in the morning no way I'm going out till it warms up. I'm just not that driven.

That is an impressive amount of tomatoes! Looks as though they are supporting the 'canopy' with a framework of sorts.

Very cool but I imagine you have to have a fairly large green house to grow them.

An Amish farm nearby has a large greenhouse that they are growing tomatoes in. They start in March and produce through fall. I can't even seen that greenhouse being large enough to grow those plants.

I haven't been on your side of the coin and I'm not that knowledgeable on how things work behind the scenes. But I think I'm glad that thread owners/OPs aren't given the power to eliminate bad posts. I feel this takes a level of maturity and integrity that some may not possess. As far as websites go, BYC is one of a kind...please don't misunderstand. But I do think it's a job that's best left to staff/moderators. Regional differences, age differences, new members and young members...even differences in style among seasoned members can cause ripples. A few disgruntled people could make an awful mess.
That's just my thoughts. :pop

opinions are like butt wholes we all have one mine agrees with you gunfighter.gif
