The Old Folks Home

As annoying as they sound, I would still like to have a flock of guineas. I just cannot do it as long as our two youngest dogs are around. They are just too 'prey' oriented to trust them.

I was driving on the highway one day, crested a hill and slammed on the brakes as there was a flock of at least 40 Guineas occupying the whole lane I was in. They were just idly moseying along like Guineas do, heads turning every direction like they owned the road. I finally had to honk the horn before they decided to move off the road but they gave me quite a laugh.

@perchie.girl
deb, You are always in my prayers. I hope all goes well and your wait will not be long to find answers and relief.
Saw this pic yesterday and thought of you:

thank you I love Friesians... sooo pretty

I probably posted bout Guineas at my Grand Parents place so sorry if so.

When I was 17 my Parents sold the orchard and we moved to a small City that did not allow chickens. I discovered that there were Guinea hens living in my Grand Parents irrigation slough! I would drive there on weekends and collect eggs from them. The Guineas escaped from someone and decided to live in the slough. Those were the best eggs! They were 100% free range too
Larger yolk in proportion to the white.... Awesome eggs... Awesome Deviled eggs too

Morning everyone sipping-smiley-emoticon.gif
Guess I'm officially a certified crazy chicken lady. Came to this realization when the first thing I did this morning was get dressed and go outside and shovel paths thru the snow so the chooks could get to their favorite spots in their yard. :lau
It gets worse. I then came inside, noticing the girls were now on the woodbox under the kitchen window looking in at me so what do I do? I grab a bowl, add kernels and pop them some warm popcorn, sprinkling brewers yeast on it for them of course.

Mostly just kicking back today. Got a roadtrip to the oncologist tomorrow for my checkup and bloodwork, no biggy. Nice thing is DH has already given the ok to come back the way that takes us by the only TSC in the north :yesss: I get to do a bit of Christmas shopping country style :love Rest of the week is going to be chaos. Think I already mentioned I will be deer camp cook again this year. Only two of the grandsons this time but trust me they can eat for four. Oh to have that metabolism again, sigh. Anyway, it's digging out the spare bedroom so the boys can actually find the bed, otherwise that room is my winter craft room, the brooder room in spring and a catchall the rest of the year. Then it's baking some pumpkin and turning them into pies, a big batch of chili of course and then I plan to throw a 10 pound turnkey into the PPXL (my electric pressure cooker). I still have to decide what I'm going to turn it into. Oh, and Lord forbid I forget to make a huge batch of my deercamp cookies. The boys would never forgive me. I didn't have any made when my daughter and family came up earlier in the fall and I had to promise to send them a "care package" as well so I have to get their's made too. I hope the boys have good luck this year, we've only seen one good sized buck so far this fall but I'm constantly chasing the does and fawns away from the chicken fence. Guess they're catching wind of all that fresh grain.

Deb, prayers for you of course, please keep us posted on your journey successes (I know you will have plenty :hugs )

Guineas are better at evading dogs than cars. And they fly amazingly well.
When I would holler Chick Chick I could hear the Guineas up in the boulders.... The Squawking and chattering Would be accompanied by the sounds of wing flaps as they landed on the roof of the house... Then they would fuss at me for taking too long as they landed in the yard.... little flying army helmets....

Deb, there are no words for your suffering. :hugs

Made donuts this morning...if you can believe it, I have never used canned biscuits before... it was an epic struggle. I followed the directions, I thought, and pushed a spoon into the seam. Apparently you're supposed to strip it of outer packaging first... so when that didn't work I moved to stabbing it with a knife, which caused biscuit parts to ooze out the holes. I was eventually able to peel it open, but jeez, what a struggle. I had told BF to buy "the cheapest store brand biscuits" per the recipe so of course he returned with butter flavored flaky grands, so my donuts are more like flaky donuts, but they taste good.

For those who want the recipe, it's easy, once you get the biscuits open.
Follow the directions exactly to get the cheapest store brand biscuit storage device open.
Remove a hole from center of individual biscuit.
Fry in about half inch of oil, turning halfway until lightly brown.
Remove from pan, place on plate with paper towels to help sop up the oil. Let cool a few minutes. Dip in a cinnamon sugar mix (I think I used 1 cup sugar to 1/2 tablespoon cinnamon, mixed well), then eat.

morning all quite the donut recipe Grandma baked all her cookies in the cast iron skillet

I've got the chooks taken care of for the day, just fed the @ronott1 Sourdough starter and got my old starter out to work with it. It's coming up to room temp now and then I will feed it and see what develops. It had a really strong alcohol odor when I uncapped it. If it doesn't make good starter it could potentially be a hit on New Year's Eve,:wee

Plans for the afternoon. Trip to the basement to run some electrical wiring.DH is going to hook up my spare stove for me that is currently stored in the utility room. My stove in the kitchen is about ten feet from the wood stove and when the wood stove is cranking in the bitter cold I'm roasting while cooking dinner. So the utility room stove will offer me some winter relief and also provide heat for three rooms.

Then I'm getting those silly cookies baked, gosh darn it!
