wow your stories of mad broody mom really make me wonder about letting my silkies raise my peeps

I know. You hear so much about OEGBs being such good mothers/broodies. I'm willing to give the broody a second chance but her sister is on a watch list. I've seen her peck my smaller BBR bantam pullets that are pure bred and I don't trust her very far at all. I told DH that with her aggression towards smaller birds that if she kept it up, I'd cull her. I have a couple of her daughters from other broody's hatchings that I'm holding my breath with and hoping that it isn't something genetic. Their redeeming quality is that they are excellent layers.

The incident was enough for me to come to the decision that I needed a separate structure for my broodies and hatchlings that was away from the main flock. I put in a request to Santa Baby for a cedar coop kit that I could set up next to the main coop for my broodies and babies. Since it would only be used during breeding season it didn't have to be insulated and since it wasn't going to be a 'main' coop a kit should work for the project.....I hope.

I've not seen the kits but I'm inclined to agree. Lots of kits make it easy for someone who isn't used to building things. But they tend to use cheap materials to keep costs down and you get to pay for all the design/cut/package/middleman profit. You can usually build something much better for less money AND you get to design it the way you want. Lots of those small coop things are pretty stupid. Like 3'x3' with 3 nest boxes attached to opposite sides. Given you shouldn't put more than maybe 3 large fowl in a coop that size, you sure don't need 6 nests. But you get to pay for them anyway.

I had to look up sunchokes, never heard of them. Sounds like it could backfire on you even if YOU don't eat any of it. Unless you pack it in his lunch and send him out to deer camp for a couple of days.

Yep, I know. I did a lot of research on them and since it will only be used in the warm weather months and what I read said that if you wanted to go with one go with cedar, so that is the one I chose and showed 'Santa'. I also looked for one with a high consumer rating With my joint problems worsening, I am to the point where I can't do a lot of building anymore. Even small projects are getting hard for me to do. It's been very hard for me to accept the fact that I'm not able to do a lot of the things that I enjoy doing and building is one of those things. Hopefully, this will work for my hens and new chicks and they will be safe.

Oh Micro, That sucks! I hate to think about not being able to build things. I have considered building rabbit cages and coops to sell once i get done building what i want myself. I keep pushing myself to dig in the dirt and lift things so i can keep doing it. But i am not as strong as i used to be. Once upon a time i could lift 100 lbs easy and i used to lift DH off his feet. Now 50 lbs is a strain but i keep doing it.

Yep, I love building things. I always have. My Mom and Dad built what they wanted. Rooms, remodeling, add ons, you name it they did it themselves so I guess I come by it honestly.
A couple of nights ago I was working on one of my quilting projects and noticed that I wasn't able to pick up pens that I had dropped without a struggle. I told my husband that I realized that I was loosing a lot of dexterity in my fingers and there were things that I REALLY enjoy doing that I wanted to do before my joints became worse than they were and I loss use of them. He agreed and said he wanted me to step back from building and turn my attention back to my artwork before it was too late.

So I asked Santa to help me go the easier route. I really want to get a hoop coop built for my extra roosters but I don't know....a lot depends on how soon I can get in to see a rheumatologist, or rather how soon my insurance will allow me to see a rheumatologist. I'm going to call and talk to them next week.

I finished another sign! He wants a weathered look so i am not staining it.
