The Old Folks Home

had the peeps I have wanted all along but only bought 4
And you generously left 2 for someone else!

14 bags of icing ready to go. That's a lot of work.
Yeah it sure is! Labor of love I guess.

My DW had me drive her Esparto
Nothing to like about that. Don't know if I could manage to hold my tongue next time I saw them. I hope they know more about tending their human flock than their chicken flock. If not they need to get into a different line of business.

It is very frustrating! I told them when we got the new ones for them that then needed to do better with protecting them. The run is not covered. The fence is chicken wire with no hardware cloth and the coops are the pre fab ones sold at TSC.

And then they were left open in a place where there are a lot of predators.

When I saw it today I mouthed off to the DW that this was one of the stupidest things I had seen. Likely it is in part due to them not raising chicks. They have always been ready for going outside or two year old hens

Ron, that would be the last time I ever helped them with anything chicken related.

Penny, you should have gotten the other 2 as well.
I know!

After I had to kill my Pita Pinta hen, I was a bit choked up too

@ronott1 I am so sorry that you had to do that. Shame on them and bless you for helping out the wounded bird. I hope you have it safely in your care.

Trying to play catchup here while eating a dinner of salmon patties, onion rings and asparagus. Pudding for desert. The past month all I wanted to eat or that tasted good to me was home made bread. Suddenly bread doesn't taste good to me and onion rings are just to die for. Must be one of the medicines they put me on causing it but I told DH that this must be what it feels like to be pregnant and have the craves. His jaw dropped and I assured him that no, I wasn't pregnant. At almost 66 years of age the baby making store was out of business.:old

But man o man I could seriously plow my way through those carrot cookies. The big number is 117 when I stepped on the scale. I've lost a total of 31 pounds. None of my clothes fit and I'm having a ball shopping online for new ones. I weigh the same weight I did when I was 23 years old. And I lost half of it before the medications started. So sheer determination played a part in the loss.

Beautiful day here today. In the 50s. DH and I took off to the woods for an hour and walked. Lots of sunshine. Spring is finally trying to take over and by George, it is welcomed to do it!

Penny, better you than me answering the siren call of the chicks. Mine come in a little over two weeks so I need to get the brooder ready. Promised DH that I would reduce the size of the flock before next winter. May offer some extra hens to the neighbors since they are in the 5 mile radius and have Amish birds also. The others will probably be sent off to freezer camp. My roosters are just being little turds at the moment. I keep picking them up staring them in the eye and telling them how good they would taste. They just cluck back at me and when I put them back down they run off to beat up another rooster.

My DW had me drive her Esparto-- about 17 miles from my place-- so that she could take care of some chores for the Pastors of the Church there. three years ago I sold them 4 hens of mine. Three of them were killed in a dog attack last Fall. At the last chick days in the Fall, we bought 6 Black Stars and raised them up to 6 weeks old for them.

When we got to the place today, I was shocked to see that the Pastor and his wife left on thursday and left the door to the run and the coops open. Of the 7, 5 were Dead and one was suffering with a completely scraped off back. She was one of my Pita Pintas that survived the dog attack from last fall. The 7th was alive with a small wound on the neck. I euthanized the one that was nearly dead and the survivor is getting the wound treated.

I would have expected them to have learned from the last attack. It was quite sad and I am not going to help them with getting more hens! There were two little dogs on the property that we had to run off. All indications are that it was a dog attack.

More than royally ticked off!

Not acceptable!

14 bags of icing ready to go. That's a lot of work. View attachment 1704040 It takes 2 bags per color. 1 is a stiffer icing to do the outlines, borders, and some of the decorations. The borders, and outlines create the boundaries to prevent the flow icing from spreading all over, and/or flowing off the edge of the cookies. 2 is the flow icing, which is much thinner, and flows to fill in the outlined areas. I also have orange, and black. I'm going to attempt to make a chick hatching out of an egg.
Boy oh boy you are a serious decorator... Do you have a sacrificial one for Taste testing.... HO thats why I dont bake.... I love cookie batter I live cake batter I love Icing...

learned along time ago this was not a good thing for me..... :gig
