I used to have issues with the neighbor Kid. Getting ready to go and Id find her sitting in the coop with a chicken on her lap.... Cage door wide open. I put a padlock on the door and that fixed that.My DW had me drive her Esparto-- about 17 miles from my place-- so that she could take care of some chores for the Pastors of the Church there. three years ago I sold them 4 hens of mine. Three of them were killed in a dog attack last Fall. At the last chick days in the Fall, we bought 6 Black Stars and raised them up to 6 weeks old for them.
When we got to the place today, I was shocked to see that the Pastor and his wife left on thursday and left the door to the run and the coops open. Of the 7, 5 were Dead and one was suffering with a completely scraped off back. She was one of my Pita Pintas that survived the dog attack from last fall. The 7th was alive with a small wound on the neck. I euthanized the one that was nearly dead and the survivor is getting the wound treated.
I would have expected them to have learned from the last attack. It was quite sad and I am not going to help them with getting more hens! There were two little dogs on the property that we had to run off. All indications are that it was a dog attack.
