It is hard to find a good broody! Mom will sit on eggs but will not take good care of the babies.Perchie, all I'm going to say to you is You Are Loved! Now remember that!
Well, my quail egg hatched on schedule Found it dead outside the nest box partially cannibalized. Juliette was acting really flakey in and out of the nesting box I took the bantam egg away from her not knowing if she has done it any harm and stuck it under a hen that has been begging for eggs for the last week. Egg is on day 18 so don't know what will happen with the surrogate mom if and when it hatches.
I'm a better broody, I've decided.
Got the juvenile Fayoumi's moved. They are trying to comprehend wind and sunlight. The bantam roosters immediately started dancing their way around the little coop. Tut, the Fayoumi cockerel was crowing his little brains out. Mom Trex and her three babies are in the coop and seem to like it in a pen there instead of outside.
Meanwhile back at the ranch, the pups decided to stage an escape...under the fence while I was mowing tonight. They were gleefully runing around like ping pong balls. Caught them, put them back, fixed the low area where they had squeezed under, turned around and Varn discovered that if he could climb the security gate, by golly, he can climb a cattle panel that is covered with wire and so he did. Catch pup again, back in pen, mow until I realize it's dard and I haven't locked up the birds yet.
I've decided that trying to keep 5 pups out of mischief is a lot like trying to keep shoes and socks and sometimes clothes on 5 toddlers.
Like I told DH. They have discoverd that there is a big exciting world on the other side of their fence. There will be no holding them in now. DH said, no, it's more like finding the weak areas in the construction and putting out brush fires as they occur.
Night all...
With a 103 year old, each day has a high probability of being the last one. Then you may need to start taking more care of Mom.been this way for at least fifty years it wont fix itself in a day.... But I am peeling the layers off for sure.

Or a shorter one. Mine are about 2 feet tall and they rarely fly up.It is hard to find a good broody! Man will sit on eggs but will not take good care of the babies.
I did have one quail kill itself this week. They like to jump and fly-- and hit their head on the top of the brooder.
I will need to come up with a taller brooder!
