The Old Folks Home

Sure thing @trumpeting_angel!! You don't even have to be old or retired to join us.

DH is a smart man, all those coops you see that say "fits x chickens" MIGHT fit half as many unless they are bantams. And often they aren't made of quality materials. One can build a larger and much better coop for less money.

Where are you in Vermont? Wherever it is you are most likely the closest BYC member to me.

I know! I think it's criminal (animal cruelty) to market those prefab coops the way they do! And they are little better than cardboard! I was looking at sheds and coops built by nearby folks.

I'm down in Windsor County, a bit far from NW VT. Right near Ascutney. Are you in the islands?

Welcome to the thread and retirement. Gosh, I hope there's no qualifying to join the thread. I don't recall qualifying. I may get booted.:D

Aww, better stay under that chair! I was kidding around. I noticed there's a 25-year-old who thinks she is old hanging around here!

I bought a little kit coop for the first hens. I had it out in the yard to test it and it was blown apart by the wind.

I spent time modding it and re building it. I did use it for several years but also built my own coop.

Luckily I am a bit handy

Hello, all you old folks!

I just stumbled across this thread. I'm retiring next week and turning 66 next month, so I figured I'd stop by and see what excitement everybody is getting up to.

I got chicks in April as my retirement project. So far, the project has been a big one for DH, who vetoed every coop I tried to buy and insisted that, against his will, he is building it himself.

He's almost done, grumbling all the way.

I have 2 buff orps (Big Bird and Little Bird), a Black Australorp (currently named Blackbird, as she was named "White Butt" early on by DH, but is completely black now. I warned him.), and a GL Wyandotte named Callie. They keep me laughing. They are 8 weeks and can't wait for their coop to be finished!

My other retirement plans include gardening (flowers and vegetables) and cleaning up the mess of a too-busy life (e.g., cartons and cartons of paperwork and - stuff). I still have some freelance work I can do, but I'm tempted to finish what I have and quit.

So, do I qualify? Can I join you? :fl :gig

I love your problem solving skills for getting the coop built!

Luckily I am a bit handy

Luckily for me DH is handy (that is, he's a talented historic restoration carpenter), but unluckily, he is wearing his tool belt 7 days a week while finishing the coop and he's not happy about it! Poor guy. His mom fell and broke her hip on the weekend we were going to finish, and then we've had all this rain.

On the happy side, he actually loves my chickies and is building a smaller version of Fort Knox.

I hope you have a lot of pictures!

Did you start a coop build article in the articles section?

Nope, just east of the islands though my wife drives there 6 days a week. She's a PO clerk. I drive through your area a couple of times a year, specialist optometrist in Northampton, MA.
