The Old Folks Home

In Vermont, officials and environmentalists say that we will be looking at climate migration in years to come. Our state will get warmer, but not so hot that people will be escaping. I guess there will be crops that we will be able to raise - probably many that can’t be grown here now.

I have stressed to my daughter, who lives a bit north of NYC, to come up here if something goes wrong down there. Loss of power, environmental disaster, leaking nuclear plant, riots, or whatever. We can heat with wood, we have loads of water, we grow lots of food and (if needed) can hunt and forage.

It’s wet enough here usually that we are unlikely to have large fires, but of course nobody can say what the future will bring.

For now, Where is the Snow? We skiers want to see some accumulation! DH has almost all of his machines prepared, and as a neighbor who stopped by said, “You have enough wood in the garage to be ready for Armageddon!”. They didn’t see the wood in the other garage, though, or on the other porch!

Sounds like here, Angel. Even those few that live in 'posher' homes have the ability to provide their own heat and hunt. We laughing say that if the lights went out we would probably be a bit ticked but life would go on. We lived without electricity here for 4+ years. Got by fine with some solar and our generator. It wasn't easy to juggle things around but I can cook on a wood stove. As for the Amish, they wouldn't notice the inconvenience at all.

Neighbor showed us a movie of a big bob cat idly strolling down the creek bed that separates our two properties that he took while out deer hunting with a bow. He then told us that there are reported sightings of timber wolves in the area. We thought he was kidding at first but he said no, he was dead serious. They were making a comeback. Great. Cougars, Bobbies, Coyotes, and Timber Wolves and oh yeah, don't forget the ever lovely black bear to worry about.

The only thing I have wanted, but we don't have yet, is a hand pump for the well. I do need to replenish some of our food. I had gone through all the shelves, organized, and tossed all the outdated stuff, moved the stuff that will expire this year to the front. With fixing the vehicles, and a few other expenses, I have added some things back in, but have not fully restocked. I'll get to it.

There was a little action around here tonight. Someone in a truck was driving real slowly, back and forth on the main road. They turned in a couple drives over, and wend down. They did it again. They got to the main road, and then turned into our neighbor's drive, and went down real slow. All of a sudden, they were flying out the drive, driving erratic, and sideswiped one of the electric poles on the way out. It was loud, and got everyone's attention. A few minutes later, they came back down that same drive again. This time, they came down the drive, then turned into the detective's yard, driving around in his yard, messing up his landscaping. By then, Dh was out on the tractor, and some of the other neighbors were out with flashlights. Someone had called the Sheriff's Dept.

One of the neighbors was standing in the drive, when the truck began flying down the drive again. He almost got hit, as the truck sped onto the main road. By then the Sheriff's Dept. had showed up, and they finally got him stopped further up the main road. They came, and got his mirror, and a few other parts that fell off the truck when it sideswiped the electric pole. He tested positive for DUI, and they found drugs in his vehicle. He left the scene of an accident (electric pole). Yeah, they hauled him to jail.

Sounds like around here or where I used to live... The house I bought was previously rented to a drug dealer... I didint know that. When I moved in Cars would creep into the yard and go through to the empty acreage be hind me... Either to smoke weed or some other things.

then one night at about eleven oclock a car came into my front yard with his head lights pointing at my front door. And just sat there. I was about four months pregnant at the time. I opened the door and asked If I could help them.

He got a worried look and said" I was just looking for Joe... is he around?" I said "no that I had lived there two months now.... No Joe."

"Ok" and he backed out.

Thats when I put in the gate and fenced across the front yard. Yep I manned a one man auger and drilled those holes.... Chainlink is easy to put up... When dad heard what I was doing he came over and helped. The Chainlink was easy the fence posts not so much... Ground hard as concrete.

I planted a tree too. Lovely paloverde.... It was about an inch in diameter when I put it in... When I sold the place it was four inches in diameter...

The house had good energy and The heart of it was just around my Linin closet. And Yes I smudged it when I moved in.
