There is an interesting thread on this in the Emergencies thread. Good arguments on both sides. Surely nobody can argue that the misuse of antibiotics doesn’t create serious problems for all.

Which is why the small flock owners are going to take it where it hurts on this one. Especially if there is no avian vet around to help you.

Yes, but @penny1960, my pack o dogs are contained. Thinking of starting a 'rent a cattle dog' business. Just kidding. Only one more left to be neutered. Whew is all I can say. Only one has tried to eat the vet's office/staff/vet so far. Think we have gotten off pretty lucky at that.

In all my years of chicken keeping, I've used antibiotics maybe 5 - 6 times. 2 of those times was to help a hen showing symptoms of salpingitis, and 3 were when I had to do bumblefoot surgery on very deep bumbles, or when it involved both feet, and topical antibiotic ointment didn't seem to be enough. That's it. Most of my chickens have never been given a dose of antibiotics. The sad thing is, taking 1 chicken to the vet, just to get antibiotics, that you already know they need, is way too expensive. A vet bill, of $50.00 - over $150.00, just to get antibiotics, for a $5.00 - $35.00 chicken is an insane price, just to get $20.00 worth of antibiotics.

I wasn't pointing fingers either. Heck, there are those that have closed flocks, due to coryza, or mareks, that need their birds need antibiotics more routinely, due to recurrence of the disease, or secondary infections due to weakened immune systems. To have to find an avian vet, which in some areas is impossible, then pay through the nose for a vet bill, just to get a few dollars worth of antibiotics, (and in many cases the vets don't sell them at cost, so there's that too) is just insane.

Sounds like a good time to stock up on antibiotics, if you can find them.
