The Old Folks Home

@CapricornFarm, I admire your drive and imagination when it comes to building a coop/pen/run for your birds and bunnies. You are so creative not to mention, industrious. I wish I could keep up with you.

I still need to get my small coop cleaned so I can spray it down with disinfectant and let it set open to the cold for a couple of months before I move my extra cockerels into it by the end of February. At the moment they aren't allowing the cold weather to dampen down their testosterone levels.

Catcher's mask? Cap I need a suit of armor sometimes.
While the Gang of 5 continues to make inroads with their training; 4 of the 5 will run back to the shop (we leave the door open) when we have them out two at a time for their afternoon run when we say "House!" and point to the door. All except Roxie who loves to race back and forth on the outside of the back yard fence taunting the three left behind as if she is saying 'neener neener neener, I'm outside and you aren't!' The funny thing is that she will do this for about 10 minutes, run back to us and lay down exhausted. Until then, may as well get comfortable and let her run until she tires of the game.

They will sit for treats, know 'down', no and come. But they exhibit such unbridled joy when they greet us that not to get mugged by them when we let them in the kitchen in the morning would have us checking them for illness. Ben and Varn hurl themselves into our arms sometimes leaping three feet over one of their siblings in order to play 'catch the dog' with us. Thank goodness they are still smallish at 35-40 pounds. But it's like catching a moving bag of feed.

We have managed to tone Ben down a bit.But not much and generally when we are sitting down, they will vie for the coveted seat next to mommy and daddy on the sofa or in our chairs by the fireplace. Which is how I got bopped on my nose. My nose was red the last time I looked so I'm afraid I will have some bruising. Hopefully not bad. I have a doctor's appointment on Tuesday. I'd hate to have to explain how I got punched by a cattle dog to him.

But then again. He knows my life style.

I really need a couple more coops! I have a bunch of young birds that badly need more space, and a silkie coop. I have part of a packing crate I plan on turning into another coop like the one I already made. It had some rotted plywood I took off, so I need to replace that. Of course, each coop needs a run.

We learn to add to our addiction, thought I would get birds out of my grow out coop my Blue cochin the 2 of them are larger than the silkie now the 11 speckled sussex are getting close 2 silkie stay on the floor with them 1/2 go up on table with the other 2 silkie like today with the rain the silkie get no break .. but the three blue marans 2 cockerel 1 pullet she slept with the big girls in the main coop last night but the boys do not want to go in with Red my EE cockerel of about 9 months

The snow you all have been complaining about has finally arrived. It’s been snowing since 3:00 pm, and we have at least 4 inches! I can’t wait to go skiing. I might be able to squeeze it in tomorrow, but since they will probably leave the new snow on the trails instead of grooming them, the conditions will not be ideal for my first day of skiing. After it stops, they will be grooming most of the trails and I’ll have better odds of no injuries.

I understand that others don’t necessarily feel as I do. But YIPPEE!

Came across this on FB this week. Thought it is an excellent way to let go and start fresh for next year. Love the simple truth of this.

The diehard skiers at Killington are skiing on the very few trails left, which are part snow, part mud. In May and sometimes into June!

In Vermont in the spring, we are saying OH CARP about driving in mud season. The top layer of our dirt roads thaws every day but it’s still frozen underneath. So when it rains there’s no place for the water to sink into. It creates a thick slurry from which many vehicles cannot escape. Also treacherous, slippery, and sometimes steering is impossible. We would take snow any day!

You can’t really ski on mud, anyway.

Nah, winter is invigorating - fresh air - yes- even if your eyelashes freeze and it stings your nose when you inhale.
Sadly we can get some polluted air here from the fire place and pellet stoves!

When we lived in Utah, depending on how deep the base was on a given year, they could stretch skiing into July. I used to joke that if the name of a month had a vowel in it, you could see snow during the month in Utah. :lau:lau
