The Old Folks Home

micro, when we bought all new kitchen appliances, I too had been warned the black was not only hard to keep clean, BUT on several brands, the black would rub/chip off over time.
I got fingerprint resistant Stainless Steel. The fingerprints are not so bad, but there is a drawback, especially to NEW SS. Wiping it down leaves it streaked, and not so pretty.

There is a trick to keeping Stainless Steel appliances pretty. Take a paper towel, and put few drops of olive oil on it, spreading them around. Now scrunch the paper towel. You don't want it too oily, but spread evenly on the paper towel. Wipe the appliance, so there is a very very thin film of olive oil, and let it set. Later on, go wipe down the appliance with a clean paper towel, or cloth to buff it. Over time, this conditions the metal, so it's easier to maintain.

Perris, it would be nice if they passed similar laws here. They could start with cell phone manufacturers. They build in obsolescence now, by limiting updates, which forces people to have to buy new phones, long before they should need to.

Another suggestion when they're passing laws is, limiting what is allowed as a unit/single component as a replacement for repairs.

Dishwashers are a great example of this. They just replaced a component on mine costing over $500.00 (under warranty, so it didn't cost me). They combined the pump with a heating coil, making it a unit. All I needed was the heating coil, but they don't sell them separately. Car manufacturers are doing more, and more of this too.

That is a shocking price! Thank goodness it was still on warranty!

a very good point; I've experienced that already with a car sidelight - the whole damn unit had to be changed. It's a scam.

I have heard of fuel filters and pump motors being one unit!

Our Formica is.... uh...... maybe 20 years old actually....

But... it has a few chips, and they put a seam right by the sink... and yes... it is starting to buckle there.

The Formica counter I had in Texas I actually liked, but mostly because it screamed dated. It held up better... and there wasn't any water damage, even around the sink.

The Formica here is a very dark green... with black seam/edges.
