The Old Folks Home

I had a heel of bread left over, so I took it out for extra special chickie snack. They'll do anything for it. One of them stood next to me long enough to pet a few times before she jumped down and away.

I want to make the chicks I get in June a little more lap chicken-ish. Really would like to have more interaction with them. The ones it have come to the door when I come up to the run, but nobody gets on my lap for petting or cuddles.
I found with mine, the older they got, the more sociable they are. But Henri my BR Cockerel didn't stand a chance since he was lame after an injury.. hehe.. he got to loving it though. Now Bonny my BO is my go to lap kid, and Henrietta, got her share of lap-time (forced but agreeable) this morning while I checked her foot. Funny, Muffin's my 'pretend' EE would run to me when anyone picked on her.. she'll come up for treats, but.. kinda like.. nah I don't want to be cuddled now.

I have a few bantams that follow me around and a couple who like to fly up on my shoulders and then drop down so I catch them and give them cuddles. The rest will tolerate pets and eat out of my hand but mainly I leave them alone to be chickens.

What I find funny is my SDW and BBR hens, all of them 3 years of age or older, will see me come into the coop with a piece of stale bread for them and start running up and down the roost bar, stretching their necks at me and singing an egg song like they are begging. Hard to turn that behavior down when you see it. It's so darn cute.

Well the water heater is DOA. Poor DH tried everything he could think of. We ordered a new one, different manufacturer and he wrote the company of the dead one to see if they will stand behind their warranty. Not holding my breath. They are all pretty good about saying what they will stand behind, until you corner them about it, then it's well we don't guarantee THAT!

How about a little sneak peek at the 2 and 4 week olds in the brooders? Hmmmmm?
Calico Princess chicks.

And 2 black sex link pullets, 1 Cinnamon Queen pullet, and two Ameracanas (May be Ameraucanas based on the store card on their brooder) Boy the Ameracanas have nice big rose combs and itty bitty muffs coming.. They also have some pretty stout legs on them.

The 4 week olds love sleeping in their sand box..

I stick a sand box in the brooder when they are a week old.. I don't care how much they fling everywhere.. they are playing and having fun, learning the necessities of life early.. and they eat the sand too. I've got tons of it outside so no worries about a lack of sand.. and they get stuff for their gut biome from the sand which makes them healthier.

I have to admit that I haven't heard of Calico Princess chickens before so I looked them up. Very pretty!

The first time I gave my chicks a sand box the first thing they did was wade in and start digging. Sand was flying everywhere. So much for that experiment.
I'll have to keep updating pics of them as they grow.. Some photos I've seen online aren't that appealing where as other are really pretty birds.

They claim this is a breed Calico Princess from where please. Why do I think this may another hatchery made breeds ?
The Calico Princess™ is a specialty hybrid created by a breeder in the Czech Republic. It is a cross between a Red Barred male and a Columbian female, making a color sex-able chick. They are great egg layers and do well in many different environments.

Seems like all breeds are crosses from other breeds. Hatcheries here have been provided parent stock to start with here.
