The Old Folks Home

No trick-or-treaters here, either.
Down a dark country road, no sidewalks, no street lights, far distance between houses... It sounds a bit like the setup of a horror movie. What could go wrong?

Our Village has Trunk-or-Treat for the local kiddies where vehicles are decorated and put on the soccer field, giving out candy from their trunks. Sponsored and put on by the Fire Department, it's safe and viable for two hours at dusk. Then the Village rolls up for the night.

We live in the middle of an Amish community. They aren't real big on trick or treating, Halloween.....New Years, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, Labor Day, Memorial Day.....blah blah blah. I don't think they are really even too excited about any holiday for that matter, at least not around us. Maybe Easter and Christmas but even that is celebrated with a degree of reservation. Guess I wouldn't make a good Amish, LOL.

Poor DH said what he missed was left over candy. So when I bought groceries I picked him up a bag of fun sized Milky Ways. He was a happy camper.

Hi Guys. What's shakin? Life is slowly settling into the cold weather season. Now that the outside work is coming to an end, I'm baaaaccckkkk...or at least I'm going to try to be around more.

My birds are fine. Well, nobody has fallen over with their feet up in the last week so I'm hoping to finish the year with a total of 11 birds that I've lost. 8 hens and 3 roosters. None to Marek's Disease at least as far as I can tell, just normal stupid chicken stuff, old age maladies along with a hungry fox who decided to dine on my free range roosters. Since I hatched 11 bantams this spring I broke even for the year. Planning to concentrate on my bantam flock next spring. After keeping birds for almost 9 years now I've decided that the birds that I want around are the ones that make me smile and my tinys definitely make me smile.

Hope y'all are doing well and staying healthy.

We didn't do any Trick-or-Treating, nor did we have Trick-or-Treaters show up. My middle daughter came over, and we all had family fun. Plenty of the larger churches do the Trunk-or-Treat thing, and there are a few very large subdivisions that go all out for Halloween. In the subdivisions, it's easier, since the houses are closer together.

When the kids were real little, we took the wagon to whichever subdivision we chose, and when they got tired, we pulled them from house to house. They'd jump out of the wagon, run up to the house, collect their candy, and come get back in the wagon. By the time we got home, everybody was tired. Some years it was still hot out, but some years it was already cold out, so we'd have blankets in the wagon too. Oh, and we always put some bottled water in the wagon when it was hot out, and a thermos or two of hot chocolate when it was cold.

One of the deputies that Dh worked with, bought a lot of those mechanized things, and set up a haunted house. Every year he would get more of the mechanized things. After a few years, it was quite the haunted house to go to. Every year he'd throw a party for all the deputies, and their families under his command. The deputies, and their wives passed out all kinds of candy, and goodies. Yes, we did cookies, brownies, rice crispy treats, etc., but we put name, and address labels on the baggies we put them in. By the time they had been doing this for 5 years, word was out that it was Halloween central. It took at least a half hour to get through the haunted house, so it was worth the side trip to go there.

@getaclue! How are you girl? It's been like forever! You have some great Halloween memories. Fantastic that somebody cared enough to keep the spirit of the holiday alive for kids and their families.

Last Halloween we had 6 inches of snow. This year it was just flipping cold. Highs didn't get out of the 20s and this morning the low was 17. Below normal for this time of the year here but supposed to be moderating some over the next week. I'm glad. I have some winterizing to finish up out in the coop and hoping that it stays warm enough to gte it finished before winter really sets in.

I have been keeping very busy on the studio!
