The Old Folks Home

Another atmospheric river made landfall early this morning - it was supposed to hit south of here, in Mendocino County, but no; the flooding had just receded from the one last weekend and here we go again, flood advisories, rivers rising, ground even more saturated than before. (We're on higher ground here so no threat, but it's a good thing we don't need to venture out anywhere today.) At least it's tropical, temps in the 50s during the day, 40s at night.

Over 2" so far today and still pouring. I took the chooks some warm oatmeal for "lunch" and had to put it in the covered run, under the coop, as only the two Easter Eggers would brave the rain to come out for treat time. Can't blame them, the back of my rain jacket had soaked through by the time I sloshed back to the house.

Life in the "Great Wet North"! The redwoods are happy, soaking it up.

We don't go out that often, and it's usually to a restaurant when we do. Last night we went to a little known treasure, not far from here. It's a Winery/Brewery, a farm, a restaurant, with a nice playground, petting zoo, and pond with a fountain that has chairs, and a couple campfires by the pond. On weekends, from 4 - 9 they have live entertainment. A friend of Dh's was playing there last evening.

I had taken my daughters there, on one of their birthdays. The food was fantastic. We don't drink beer, so we didn't do a sampler of that, but we did do a sampler of their wines. Their wines are expensive, and awful. I'm told their beers are pretty good. It's the restaurant that keeps them in business. We got there at 4:00, and the kids headed to the playground. We sat at the huge outdoor part of the restaurant, so we were right near the playground, petting zoo, and could keep an eye on the kids from where we were sitting. It's actually set up for this, and the only entrance/exit is through the outdoor section of the restaurant. Nobody is going to snatch, or harm a kid. There were about 20 kids of varying ages playing. No teens are allowed to "play" in the kid areas.

After bit, I grabbed the kids, and we went to check out the farm (Dh stayed at the table). All their crops are organic, and they mostly grow them for their wines, and their restaurant, but visitors can pick a few of the fruits to enjoy. Strawberries are in, so we got to pick, wipe off, and eat some sweet strawberries. The blueberries had already been completely picked. We fed, and petted the goats, then the kids got hungry. We went back, and ordered food.

Dh had already ordered a couple apetizers, and was sampling the food. He got Gator bites, and Bruschetta. The kids tore into what was left, while waiting on their food to arrive. Those Gator bites were made from the good part of the gator tail, and had been done right. Best I've had in quite some time. On of the kids opted for fruit instead of french fries with her dinner. She, and her sister both ordered additional fruit plates. The fruits were ones that were grown right there, on their farm, and they were pretty generous with it. I ordered the Shrimp and Grits. I confess, I don't usually like grits, but there are 2 places that actually know how to cook them, and I'll eat them there. This is one of those places. When it arrived, I gave Dh a taste, and he agreed it was delicious, and ended up ordering it for himself too. The kids got Gator tacos, and cheeseburgers. The lettuce, onions, tomatos, kale, and herbs were all grown there too, which added to the taste.

Dh's friend played. Normally he plays heavy metal, but changed it to easy listening for this place. He did really good. At 8:30, Dd took the kids home. That gave Dh, and I a bit of us time, away from them. The music ran overtime, until 9:30, so we got about an hour to ourselves. I drank iced tea the whole time, since I never drink beer, and I simply can't stand their wines. By the end of the evening, Dh had sampled several, and put away a few beers he liked. He wasn't feeling any pain. Dh is a happy drunk, and I never have to worry about him getting mean, nasty, or uncooperative when he drinks. I was the designated driver, and brought us safely home.

Before we left, I ordered a cheesecake to go. Remember when I said they had already picked all the blueberries. Well, not only were they using them on the fruit plates, BUT they had made a blueberry reduction sauce, from their own blueberries, to go on the cheesecake. It was fantastic.
This place sounds fantastic! Grits. Love them. I used to live in the south. Here in Utah they don't eat it but do sell it in the stores. Cracker Barrel fixes it. I'm guessing I fix it better. ;) Real alligator?

According to the Weather Channel, the low for tonight is to be 44 degrees. It's 38 degrees out now, with 10 mph winds. I'm not happy about the cold, but when it's windy too, that's awful. The duck, and chickens are all set. I got the Sweeter Heaters for the chickens. I have a large heating pad, with "constant on", that I put under the duck house. Of course, I'm not so concerned about the duck. That crazy duck will go swimming in 42 degree weather like it's nothing. THEN, when she gets out of the super cold water, all wet, she wants me to pet her.
