The Old Folks Home

Arielle..you should see this EE! She has gotten so beautiful I am still waiting for an egg. Her coloring is just beautiful! She is a pretty dark blue on the head and neck, with...some redish brown color in it. Her body is a lighter blue. She is one that has that sweet look to her face/eyes. I will have to get a picture of her. She comes by me when I lean down. Very friendly for not laying yet. Going to be a big girl when she is finished growing. Love her!

I think the trick is to scald right away and not wait. I tried scalding geese after letting them chill in the snow, waiting for the HUGE pot to come up to temp. Boy was that a nightmare. Took a very long time to pluck. ANd still a poor job at that. Do you find the skin to be thinner than the commerical chicken at the grocery?

Yes, we wait for the temp to come up and then go get the next bird to start the process. We've gotten good now that we can find the perfect propane setting so it's almost always at the right temp. The skin... I don't eat commercial birds, so not really sure. Some birds have pretty thick skin (some of my turkens) and some not so much.

been reading the 100 plus pages. you all sound like great people. I am from California. have horses, chickens, chihuahuas, have doves to sing to me. I love to cook. Use to can. I used to paint with acrylics and draw with chalk. Oh yes I am a dog groomer.
I have 2 children, 2 grand children, 18 and 21. Love the recipes on here. Oh yes have goldfish in my pond with my water plants... I am 63 years old and still learning....

Welcome!

I was poked to be here, so here I am. Life has been difficult this past year and I have not participated a great deal in this website. But I am willing to reform myself.

Howdy, stranger! Hope we can help you forget some of your woes and give you something to smile and laugh about.

that I hear something pretty quick after that.

Welcome to SueG and DebiR! Yes, I gave Debi a little poke, just to get her headed to where she needed to be anyway.......Sue? Well, as far as I know, she found her way without a poke! LOL!

Sue- I was a groomer, as well! I even had a chest high bathtub installed in the basement of our last home to groom from there. That never really panned out as I got tired of the long hours, the smell and the hair before I started doing it out of my home. I have to admit though, it was the best money I had ever seen to that point in my life and for a long time afterward. I groomed out of a pet shop that provided me with the space, cages, dryers, water and electric. I provided the comsumables (shampoo, dip, cologne, etc. which they sold me at cost) and the clippers and blades. They took 10% of the total and the rest was mine. The store even made appointments and would handle the customers for me if I was busy (and I was ALWAYS busy!)

Speaking of recipes- I know that you all probably have made these before but it was my first time making them. We (three boys) call them "Chicken Balls" I put chunks of cooked chicken (boiled or canned would do) and sliced mushrooms on the fat end of a crescent roll. I added onion, salt and pepper and was tempted to include a bit of butter but didn't. Roll them up and put them in a casserole dish that was sprayed with Pam and add Cream of Chicken and/or Cream of Mushroom soup to the pan. If there are leftover mushrooms, chicken, or onion, that can go in the soup. Top the balls with cheeze and cook at 350 until the crescents are brown (20 - 30 minutes.) You can also put the cheeze in the soup or in the balls with the chicken....yummy and fun for the kids to help with.....

That sounds yummy!!!!

A bit about me and why I haven't been here a whole lot this last year. In February, Ken was diagnosed with stage IV emphysema. If has been difficult adjusting. Ironically, natural gas stoves are the number 1 irritant for people with lung disease, so I have been nuking almost everything. If I turn on the stove, we have to open every door and window and he has to be on oxygen while I am cooking. Needless to say, cooking has been a pain. Well I finally got a counter top oven and an electric skillet and last night made fried chicken and cornbread without using gas!!!! I CAN COOK AGAIN!!!

We still have the goats, chickens, ducks, dogs and cats. And more cats. And even more cats. Two feral females moved into our garage and had their babies. 8 cats in the garage, but hey there are no more mice!!!

It really was good! I'm thinking of trying it with ham and cheddar (cream of celery?) or pepperoni and mozzarella (pizza sauce) or even beef, peppers, carrots, potatoes, and brown gravy!

Deb many ((((HUGS)))))) to you. Hopefully things will get a little easier.
Wisher that sounds really good but how do you keep the rolls from being soggy on the bottom? This is the main reason why DH doesn't like pigs in a blanket and you don't cook those in soup.
Interview has to be rescheduled. UGH!!!!! It feels like this is never going to end. I guess I should be thankful that I don't need the job but this is annoying. LOL

Here is a really great recipe, adults and kids alike love it.

Pizza Cups

Take a tube of the flaky butter flavor biscuits and flatten them into 4 inch circles. Line cupcake tins with the biscuits

Brown 1 lb of ground beef, drain and return to pan
Add 1 jar of Ragu pizza sauce, chopped up pepperoni and mozerella cheese, however much or little as you want.

Fill the muffin tins and top with more pepperoni and cheese.

Bake at 350* for 30 minutes. VOILA!
