Like others have said, she went out doing what she loved and not alone. I'm sure you did all you could to make her as comfortable as possible. You sure do take wonderful care of your flock. Is there nothing to be done about internal laying? I must confess, I've never heard of it, but I'm still learning. What is it and how does it happen?

I so loved Ginger's face when I met her...she was so beautiful to sit and talk to. I am glad her struggle is over and she is with her other friends who have passed on before her...She will be updating Rosemary, Violet, Lacey and Hawkeye on all the latest goings on since they left.

As Ginger leaves, two new orps came into our lives here today.

No, it can't be fixed. Internal laying and egg peritonitis are just reproductive malfunctions. Egg materials fill the oviducts full and layer upon layer of "gunk" is added till it looks like a sausage in a casing. It's hormonal/genetic and very common in high production type breeds, i.e., most of the common hatchery breeds like RIR, BR, Orps, and Wyandottes. No cure other than hysterectomy and even then, it may not be enough to save the bird since infection spreads all through the abdomen.

So sorry to hear that Ginger has died - you have had to endure so much suffering Cynthia, I can only hope that I can have as much resolve as you when it comes to the death of my own - so far all I can do is bury my babies and shed enough tears to dehydrate myself - it is so hard to acknowledge their passing and my babies are all buried in my garden in a special place by the river.

Rest in peace Ginger - you had one special Mum - we can only look up to Cynthia who has taught us so much and is still teaching us how best to look after our babies - if I were a chicken I would want Cynthia to be my Mum!

All the best

Suzie

You are so sweet to say that. Thank you, but I don't feel I deserve it. As I type, my Ivy is close to the end. She is in the hospital cage, brightened only by the grapes I bought for her today. Her sister, Lexie, is with her and seems content to stay by Ivy's side.

Awwwwww shucks Cyn, just hope Ivy will pass on quietly!

given to their ages, I am afraid one of my Wellie girl will die at that age. She is not from a hatchery but she is a very good girl!
