Where in the world did you find auburn javas???? Wow!

Babyrnlc- I have some EEs that certain time of year they lay sage eggs, and then for months they'll lay blue. Its like a wellie running out of "paint" - if that makes sense.

I think some of the reasons you mentioned are why I'm being drawn to OE and EE. I know that breed standards have to exist for a reason, and there is definitely a place for them. But, it makes me sad when someone posts a picture of a beautiful bird, and they're told it's not up to "standard" or that it's not good enough to be shown. With OE and EE, they don't have to conform to anything- if they are pretty and lay a pretty, colorful egg, they are superior birds.

Babyrnlc, how old are your supposed "bcm pullets" in those pictures? If they're 5-6 months old, I would think they're pullets, but I don't know. I have a BCM/EE cockerel that I hatched for my SIL. He is 11 weeks old, and is very obviously boy (scroll up to see his pic). That olive egg sure is beautiful, one of my EE hens laid an egg like that. I'm hatching a couple of hers right now. 15 more days!

I think the only way to know for absolutely certain is to hang around your coop alllllll day, or you could use lipstick on the vents of your chickens. You'd get streaks of color on the eggs to know for sure. Personally, I've gone the "hang around the coop" route.

They are 6 months old, the pictures are at 5 months. Ilia said that because of the red on the shoulders they must be roos. Their tails are getting a little curly, but still have not got saddle feather or a crow out of them. I figured if they are roos that dont crow we may keep them. We just did not want roos because we did not want to bother the neighbor.

Maybe friday, I will hang around the coop. I will let them free range all day and see who goes back in.

They are 5 month old Auburn Java's. The first is a pullet. The gold spangled hamburgs are the more common that look close to them. They come in large fowl(lf) or bantam. The Auburn Java's on the other hand are only Lf and are a dual purpose breed , but are known more for meat then eggs. As my mother ( a non chicken person) calls them the dolly Parton chickens because of the large breast they get when older. That is one reason I have been thinking of crossing one of the java roosters on my F2 oel's ( olive egg layers) is that they hopefully would put more meat on to the chicks along with the spangled genes and the colors. The only down side is Javas lay med reg brown eggs.
So I may loose some color. What I would do next is cross the F1 java x oels back to a blue or blk brichen marans rooster to add the egg color and size along with new color genes.
My F2 girls pictured in the post above had a crele pattern full brother that I had to sell as I had no where to out him. So the carry the same crele gene. I often wonder what the spangled gene and crele gene make when mixed. Does anyone know?

Well, Ilia is definitely a much bigger expert than me and it's scary to go against someone who has so much more experience. Having said that, my BCM roo was crowing by 8 weeks. My BCM/EE cockerels I hatched are 10 weeks, and one is crowing. Their combs are definitely prominent and bright red. In your picture, they are 5 months old, and their combs aren't red. Go see my rooster- he was 5 months old or so in that picture. See the difference in comb between him and your BCMs? I don't think they're purebred BCM, and I don't think they're cockerels either.

I dont think they are pure bred either, now I am starting to wonder if maybe they are crossed with an EE, who knows. But ilia is adament as well as some others that they will be roos, because of the red on the shoulders.

I think maybe they are just late bloomers. Their tails are getting a little bit curly, but not like the roos I see. The younger one is 5 months (4 months in the picture).

They were mid may hatch, so that would make them six months right. I keep thinking maybe they are younger.
