The Olive-Egger thread!

Hello all from Ohio!
I have 8 Olive Eggers ( lav amer x bcm) that are almost 5 weeks old.
Any helpful hints on how to tell sex?
I have 2 with no tail feathers, legs are large, wings have a geenish tinge, and have developed slower.
7 have tail feathers and are solid black, seem to have smaller combs.
Thanks

Can we get some pictures?

Which is the rooster, the Ameracauna or the BCM?

I have 4 Olive Eggers I hatch from a Black copper Marans rooster over an EE hen (who lays a beautiful mint green egg). Anyway I tried my hand at feather sexing these and I believe I have 2 pullets and 2 roos. I was wondering if there is any reason to keep one of the OE roos? I have the BCM rooster and I also have an EE roo.

Also guys if u have time plz check out my poll I have running on which EE roo to keep. I have 2 and cant decide. Which do u like best?

This last chick is soooo cute, make sure to keep that one!! But then Im a sucker for anything blue. As far as feather sexing goes, Im pretty sure it is only accurate on chicks bred for it (ie slow feathering hen x fast feathering roo) or something like that. But its worth a shot!! Good luck with your chickies, and post pics as they grow!

You are correct you have to cross a rapid feathering male with a slow feathering female. Rapid feathering is only found in certain breeds-like a leghorn. Hatcheries will feather sex birds and it they do this the males carry rapid feathering and slow feathering alleles the females only carry the rapid feathering allele. This can mess things up in a feather sexing cross.

The Asiatic, American and English breeds are slow feathering- Mediterranean and some Continental breeds are rapid feathering.

Does anyone have any OLDER chicks for sale? Or hens already laying? I'd be interested in buying a few (hens only, no roos). I live in central WI near the Dells and am willing to travel 2-3 hrs. There's a swap this Sat in Seymour or else next Sat I'm going to a small animal auction in Kendall, WI. If you want to let me know what you have available and which you can meet me at, I'd love to check out your chickens! :)
