The Olive-Egger thread!

Update on Mr. Crowley...last week he started "performing" but still no crowing at 26 weeks old. How much is a silent rooster worth? He's so sweet though...so far.
I just love reading about all of ya'lls breeding projects.

There is a Vet that sells decrowed Roosters--I have not checked into the cost but I bet it would be very expensive to buy one.

The usefulness of a rooster isn't in his crow. It is in his protectiveness of his gals, calling them over for food, breaking up fights. Maybe he is the strong, silent type.

Totally new to OE-ing. I have BCM and BBS Marans cockerels and two black Ameraucauna pullets. I read a lot about BCM X Am for OE, but little to nothing about blue copper Marans X AM. Please comment on my rationale here...if I use a blue copper over the black Am, am I looking at F1 OE that will theoretically be 50/50 blue base and black based F1 birds? Thanks for your help.

Other BYC members know more about this than me but it depends on the type of Black Genes in the Black AM.

I say go for it!

So what dark egg laying breeds also have barred/cuckoo varieties?
Are there any cuckoo marans breeders with dark egg strains? I want to get some barring in my flock without have to breed up too much from light egg colors.

I see Ron answered this one
Here is a young Crele Penedesenca rooster you can see a crele hen on the right

I plan to try and breed with silver ameraucana . One in the middle is gone. I have 4 more a little lighter than the other 2 as well.

crele penedesenca egg is on top . white emperdanesa egg in the middle. bottom one was another crepe egg from a friend that sadly did not hatch

Out here in California, we call the Crele Penedesenca x Cream Legbar Amelias, for Amelia Earhart since they are crazy flying chickens.

They lay very nice Green to olive eggs:

The top egg, bottom egg and the egg at the bottom left are from Amelias. The one on the top left is an EE X Marans.

I plan on breeding them back to Crele Penedesenca to see if I can get darker eggs and what percentage still have the Blue egg gene.
looking good Ron

Nice Eggs Jason!

I moved my Amelias(Cream Legbar X Crele Penedesenca) into a breeding pen tonight and brought back one of the Crele Penedesenca Cockerels that I hatched from your flock last Spring. I am going to breed them for the NYD Hatch a Long!

Have some Creme Legbar eggs in the incubator. So half of a pair anyway =) The eggs got lost for a couple days so will see if they hatch and will continue following the thread out of interest. I love the speckled look of some of the olive eggs.
