The Olive-Egger thread!

What is the color ratio of a blue based Marans X black Am with a lavender parent? I can only do the charts with easy color genetics at this point :)

Phenotypically (visually) it's exactly the same ratio as blue based Marans x black AM of any sort. However, genotypically (what the genes those chickens offer) one quarter of all the resulting chicks will carry split for lavender.

Wow! The crele penedesenca roo sure is beautiful, but not the body shape I'm looking for. Guess I'm stuck with cuckoo marans for now. I wish barred rocks had dark enough eggs to work with. I like the shape and egg production, also the cold tolerance.

That would be a good choice where you live. It gets very hot here in the summer and rarely snows so heat tolerant is important. Marans die hear without misters and lots of special treatment. A Breeder in Red Bluff lost 15 in one heat wave last summer.

There are some very nice looking Welsummers and Barneveldeners that might work better for you.

Well, I guess this will be my last update on mr. Crowley. Went out this am to let them out and I heard him! He didn't sound too awfully bad for a first time crow. At 27 weeks old this is the latest I've ever had one start crowing, but I've never had this mix before. Now if his "sisters" would just start giving me thier hopefully olive colored eggs...

I am a newbie with my first-ever hatch going on. There are some mixed eggs that are Salmon Faverolles X cuckoo Marans (I think). Is there a way to tell pullet from cockerel at hatch with this mix?
Cuckoo Marans will have lighter boys but you have to wait until they feather.. Faverolles will take a week or so--Dark feathers on the wings is a boy.

I hope you have a great hatch!

Hoping for some dark Olive eggs out of these girls, F2 or F3… I'm not sure. I covered a light green egg layer with a BCMs, then covered that girl with a BCMs again and these are the babies from that…waiting on an egg.

You have a very good chance! I see nice peas in those combs.

Keep us posted.

What kind of record-keeping methods does everyone use?
Right now I have a big excel spreadsheet with tabs for each hatch, plus a tab with my current flocks. Columns for leg band, breed, comb, color, egg color, etc.

I want to use an ipad app to make a profile for each keeper, with pictures of hens & the eggs they lay, plus link back to the spreadsheet. Something like a baseball card for each one maybe....
