The Olive-Egger thread!

This is our F1 Lavender OE. She has now started laying medium olive eggs, but I can't get a decent photo of egg color. We prefer the single comb Olive Eggers, but will hatch some of her F2 eggs from this dark-egg BCM cockerel from a Bev Davis egg.
Very nice OEs. Thanks for posting pictures.

My girl just turned 5 months old...she is 1/2 fbcm & 1/2 ameraucana...are oe's known to start laying at 6 months or are they like ee's that usually start to lay at 7-9 months old?
Mine started between 5 and 6 months. Some right at 5, some closer to 6. They are EE x birchen Marans. My EE's and my birchen Marans started laying around 5 months also, the Marans slightly closer to 6 months. I found the EE's to be excellent layers. I have some young Ameracaunas, but I have never had a mature hen, so no idea on when they typically lay.

Because of the time of year, amount of sunlight, you may experience a longer wait for an egg. Mine hardly lay in the winter normally. I am getting lots of eggs right now, but only because I have a heat lamp in the coop for the chicks. I hope you get one soon!

I figured it wouldn't be right away with it being winter and all but since my EE waited til she was 10 months old (in the late spring/early summer) to start laying i was hoping i wouldn't have to wait as long with Olivia. I love raising them from babies but it's so hard to wait for them to start laying :)

I know what you mean about waiting. I only have one OE and I couldn't wait to see the egg color. I hatched her with a broody. She laid recently at almost exactly 7 mos. Beautiful dark olive egg. She laid 5 in a row and now hasn't laid in a week. At least I got to see the color she'll lay. It's worth the wait.

Not sure if I should be happy or sad. I was just told by the farm I got my Black Copper Marans from that one of them is actually an olive egger after I sent him some updated pics of the two BCM's I got from him. I think she's a beauty but was set on her laying me some dark brown chocolate eggs. She hasn't laid yet but should be in the next couple of months. I do have olive eggers on my wishlist so I am not too upset but also not too happy that I got something I wasn't expecting. Anyway, here she is Miss Molly. She even has the feathery feet of a marans. Anyone else have a BCM olive egger?

Mine is 3/4 BCM and 1/4 CCL, but doesn't have any of that pretty gold frosting. She's solid black with a nice green sheen to them, but has feathered legs and a single comb.

I personally would be thrilled with that bird. That's what I hope to do this spring. I got some BCM just to make olive eggers. I figured their eggs would be pretty in my egg basket and I could then make olive eggers.
Unfortunately the BCM are some of my poorest layers while my EE's are fantastic.
So much so that I've thought of canning this project, but I guess I'm hoping if I make olive eggers they will lay more like the EE's instead of the BCM.
I figure I've gone this far, I might as well finish the project.
BTW, hatchery prices, the OE's and BCM are usually the same price so you didn't really lose financially by getting an OE.
Right now I would happily swap one of my BCM for an OE.

Lovely pullet. We breed Isbar X Marans and BCM X legbar OEs. I also have this girl who just started laying a lovely olive egg, lavender Ameraucana X lav split Marans. I prefer the single combs for sexing. She is laying almost every day, but my Marans are productive.

Here is an Isbar X Marans nearing POL:

And a little BCM X legbar pullet:
