The Olive-Egger thread!

I don't understand the significance of the pea comb genetics ... could someone explain?
Araucana based blue egg layers have an association between the pea comb and the blue egg shell gene. More than 90% of the time they go together so you can help pick OEs by using pea combed hens and roosters.

It does not work for Cream Legbar based blue egg layers though.

Araucanas and Ameraucanas both have blue egg genes and a pea comb. The genes for pea comb and blue eggs are very close together on the same chromosome. Geneticists have found that usually these two genes are inherited together since they are so close on the chromosome. Usually if your chicken has a pea comb, it will also have a gene for blue eggs.

This does not work for cream legbars or legbar crosses. They don't have pea combs, yet they do have blue egg genes. The cream legbars were developed by breeding Araucanas, leghorns and barred plymouth rocks. Over time they selected for blue eggs from the Araucana lines, single combs and color from the leghorns, and auto-sexing which was passed down from mixing barred rocks.

On a side note, I have some legbar hens. They lay nearly white eggs that just have a tint of blue to them. While I'm not happy about the color of the eggs, they are large (69 gram average) and the birds are fairly nice.

Hi everyone :) one of my girls went broody and I thought instead of breaking her mabye I'd let her hatch some babies.
Does anyone have hatching eggs available for sale?
I love the unusual mixes (frizzled, crested or NN a plus) but more interested in the color egg they will eventually lay. Looking for any girls hatched to eventually lay a nice dark olive colored egg like in the picture. Im in NJ so please be central or eastern located (west coast too far never had any luck with shipments from there)
Thanks

Those are very nice eggs!

One of my OE pullets(Ok, she could lay dark brown eggs but I hope she lays Olive colored eggs) was roosting on a coiled hose tonight!

She is a Cream Legbar x Crele pene bred back to a crele pene.

Wow! Them's some dark brown eggs? Marans? I have a blue copper who laid her first egg yesterday, but it was medium brown with darker brown pixellated dots.
