The Olive-Egger thread!

My OE came from another BYCer who hatched her from an egg she got from Wynette & these birds are SUPPOSEDLY olive eggers! I am really bummed right now because I have chosen the birds in my mixed flock specifically for the colors of eggs they will lay. If I'd known she would not lay a green egg, I would not have gotten her. Now I'm all attached to her and stuff & couldn't part with her, but she's taking up a spot in the coop that COULD have gone to an olive egger.

So if a chicken hatches from an olive egg, that doesn't necessarily mean she'll lay an olive egg??

No. The Olive egg may have been fertilized by a Marans or another Olive Egger, giving a moderate/decent chance of a dark brown or normal brown egg layer. Sorry.

Even F1 Olive Egger eggs (being either blue or dark brown) won't give a 100% chance of a pea combed, olive egg laying bird. I myself got 3 single combed "olive eggers" out of a F1 breeding of 8 total chicks.

She probably wouldn't lay a dark brown egg, probably just brown. Mine lays one thats all chalky in texture and inconsistent in color. Not enough of the dark egg genes, not enough paint.

One of my *potential* OEs just started laying. The eggs are dark with speckles just like a welsummer. Not olive, but still dark and very pretty.
They should show color from at least one of the parents so I would expect something nice for you either way. Why would you just get a plain brown egg when neither parent is a "plain brown egg" bird? Gee- maybe she'll lay a white egg

Seriously, don't give up hope.

I have 1 OE that is about 22 weeks old and I am patiently waiting for her to lay, she has a pea comb, so fingers are crossed for my first Olive Egg.

I also have 3 more that are about 18 weeks old, 1 straight comb, 1 pea comb, and 1 with a mix of the two.

I am hoping to breed towards a blue/copper feathered Olive Egger, as I have both a pullet and rooster that are these colors, and I think they are gorgeous.

Bummer! She likely won't, but I do have one little OE hen with a straight comb that lays olive eggs. I wouldn't of believed it but I watched her lay her first, I couldn't believe my eyes! So don't give up all hope.

I don't know what you're OE mix is but I've also been pleasantly surprised by my non-olive laying OEs (ie the rest of the single combed girls). They lay a very nice dark brown, so dark, its hard to tell the difference between my Marans and my brown-laying OEs. Not olive, but still a nice addition to the egg basket!

I hope she lays soon! I'm supposed to get a BCM pullet in a few days from someone, but I don't want it if this one lays dark eggs! I can only have so many chickens, so I am wanting 1 of each color egg-layer. I have a barred rock who gives us a pretty pink egg every day, one EE (who I think is a real brown/red ameraucana) who lays a beautiful aqua blue egg, one EE who lays a light green egg, our brahma will eventually give us medium brown eggs, and we have an EE/american gamefowl mutt chicken who should start laying any time now and we have no idea what she'll give us, but she does have a total pea comb so we are expecting it'll be of a blue variety. If my OE doesn't lay olive green eggs, I'm going to have to find another one somewhere & I won't need a BCM if this one lays dark brown eggs.

Argh.

Oh, the parentage of these OEs is ameraucana x penedesenca, covered with a BCM roo. They were hatched from Wynette's eggs.

Let me look back, but I'm pretty sure that's the same parentage of my OEs, also from Wynette. I'll get you a photo this evening. All three of my non-olive laying OEs lay dark brown speckled eggs, so I'd say its likely yours will lay the same. They really are very nice and consistent! They've hardly missed a day since they started laying a month or so back. I think you'll be pleased.

Illia!

Well, I just pulled up this thread specifically to inquire what you guys thought about combo as a breeding situation, hopefully someone will chime in.

Even if not, I have some test examples of that breeding situation peeping around in the brooder as we speak!

I had two little babies hatch this morning parented by two OEs from Wynette's stock. I'm anxious to see how they turn out and am curious if you guys have any predictions.

I'll post some pictures of the parents and new babies right after lunch (East Coast time) and see what you guys think.

Oh, I promised baby pictures! I have such a soft spot in my heart for fun mixes, you never know what you'll end up with!

Well, this is a totally crappy cell phone picture, but it's the only one I have here at the office. I'll get you a better example later. All the dark eggs in this picture are from non-olive OEs.

Oh those are beautiful dark brown eggs! I would be totally happy if she ended up laying those. She has dark layers on all sides except her mother is 1/2 Ameraucana. But I would love some dark eggs like that if she ends up laying brown. Which I am fine with. The only egg color I don't like and won't have is white hehe it seems so boring to me

Thank you for the pictures Neeley they helped a lot at least with me

My girl is beautiful either way, and hopefully she will fit in well here.

I will post new pictures when I get them!

No problem, Morgan! I saw the picture of your girl, she is beaaaautiful! Though I may be partial, cause I have a girl that is seriously her twin.

I'll have to find a picture of her for you.

You know, I never wanted white eggs either, until I randomly ended up with a funky girl from a friend who ended up laying white eggs and I love them! It really helps make the other colors stand out.
