The Olive-Egger thread!

Olive Eggers don't breed true, they breed just as "true" as crossing any other two purebred breeds

If that male shown there, handsome guy, is an OE from Black Copper Marans parents, the reason he looks like a BW Ameraucana is because your BC Marans parents were carrying recessive Wheaten, and had very light leg feathering. Beard/muffs and pea comb are dominant, so thus, you basically get a beefed (from the Marans) version of an Ameraucana, but with white legs and olive eggs.

Thank you for the insight Illia. I am definitely still learning, please bear with me. He is not of my breeding, just of my hatching. (Side question: Is this a useful test cross to determine if my BCM are carrying recessive wheaten?) As far as them breeding true, I should have clarified. Not the birds, egg color, does green egg color breed true? I guess it is not relevant as he was the lone hatchling and I don't have an olive egger to breed him to...so just for curiosities sake? So OE x OE = a similar shade of olive egg? OE x dark brown egg layer(i.e.Marans type) = darker green egg? OE X Blue egg layer (i.e. true Ameraucana or Araucana type) = lighter green egg? Do they always combine like that or will some from a cross like that still only lay brown or blue eggs? What would breeding to a white egg layer do to the egg color? (Nothing?) I'm sorry if this has been discussed before...I haven't seen it. Thank you for your patience all

Not really. You have a dark brown layer and a blue layer, put them together, and you have a bird with partuial genes for each color. From there, wherever you breed it to, its genes and the other parent will follow. If you really want to though, you CAN make a true breeding green type color, but it takes much patience with hatching and testing a lot of F1 x F1 girls.

OE x OE, first gens, will create anything from the original blue parent's blue to the original dark layer parent's dark brown to normal brown to normal green to a serious dark greenish gold to a serious dark green and everywhere in between.

OE x dark layer = darker egg yes, however it's a little less "green" but still seriously awesome in color.

OE x blue layer = more greenish blue of an egg. Slightly lighter yes, but more blue really.

Here's a chart I did a while ago -

White egg layers added lightens the egg color without changing the hue.

The chart is a little outdated for my info though, as I'm sure a OE x OE creates a huge mixture of egg color opportunities.

Thank you Illia... Great info. I am so curious to see what I get with the layering of colors. Sometimes I wish you could tell what color of egg they will lay when they first hatch.

Still trying to learn this patience thing. Have a couple OE eggs pipped in the incubator. Guess I have a few months to see what I get.

I will have to share some pics of my three month old F1 of my Araucana x BC Marans. Two pullets and one is rump-less.

It DOES take a lot of time and patience! I bought a bunch of olive- egger hatching eggs, only got 2 hens, and they are likely 2nd generation (the eggs were a mix) because one lays a beautiful chocolate brown, and the other lays a blue-green. The only hen I have that lays close to olive is a EE roo x Welsummer.

I kept an OE rooster from the hatch, -no idea if he is first or second generation. Is there any way to tell anything about his genes by physical features? He has a pea comb, but no muffs or beard? I am eager to try crossing him with a variety of hens, but I need to make room for more birds!
