The Pita Pinta Asturiana

Yum! Broccolini is good!
Hmm, broccolini. I am having so much trouble getting my girls to eat healthy veggies and fruits. I even steamed some chard and cut it into small pieces for them, and they still wouldn't eat it. Nor will they eat parsley, kale, or even blueberries. The only produce they really seem to enjoy is apple. Maybe I should try broccolini next. Cute pics, btw.

Me, too, but I think one is a dude. So far. But my fingers are crossed. I "mis-diagnosed" a project Marans chick last summer who popped out a big comb at ten days, and then turned out to be a hen (the manliest Marans hen I've ever seen, mind you!). My nieces still remind me of that when I say i think a chick is a boy!

Whatever they would naturally go for first in the garden is what I give them to munch on, since they don't go out to free range yet. Kale, chard, broccoli and broccollini, and i pull up the whole cauliflower plant once I cut the head off are particular favorites. They don't like herbs like parsley, basil, etc, that I've ever seen. Mama has taught the that its okay to take food from my hand, so they'll try a variety of greens (turnip and beet tops) but don't seem to like some.

It has been my experience with my Pita Pinta that the boys pop out red combs early and they also quickly outgrow the girls in size.

Mine love to eat from my hand and seem vaguely offended when I put things on the ground rather than hand feeding, but they still won't eat their healthy greens! They are young, so I thought the chard might be too tough, but even steamed caused them to turn up their noses. My cat, meanwhile, loves greens so much that he will eat them until he throws up if I don't intervene. Sigh.

Hah!

A lecturer from the University Writing Program came to my office today looking for friendly chickens. Of course he is now on the list for Pita Pintas!

Very cute! I just got back from spending 6 days in AZ visiting my parents. I knew that I would miss my family but I was surprised at how much I missed my chickens. Monet held down the fort for me. She did all my outdoor chicken chores, took care of the 1-2 week old Pita Pinta chicks, and kept an eye on the 2 incubators that I have running. She was very happy when I got home late last night!
