50 more days until spring!
Hi, I have been following this thread for a few days and I must say that I was dying of jealousy looking at all the awesome pictures of all of your birds. I am a sort of newbie to chickens or breeding them is more the point. I have had chickens for two years now and I started with Barred Rocks. However, though mine do look good they aren't pure. I got them at a feed store.
I do want to get some pure Barred Rocks. I am currently working on building some new coops for some other birds I'm getting as soon as the weather cooperates. I am in love with the breed and Barred Rocks are beautiful birds.
Thanks for listening to a newbie and I hope I can learn much more. I'm interested in raising and breeding pure BRs and I'm finding a lot of interesting information on this. Thank you.![]()
The old style boxes had wire tops, as shown. It was just fine for transporting 9 weeks old juvies. But, for adults or finer birds needed for a demonstrations or exhibiting, the new style box is smooth on the inside, which helps the birds arrive with no feather damage at all. After thousands of miles of good service, that old box hasn't "travelled" in a good while, but makes a nice little sequester space for smaller birds, so I keep it around gathering dust mostly.
I also have this horrible penchant of over building everything. That a good trait in building construction, but when it comes to portable poultry tractors, pens, or travel boxes, it is so completely WRONG.![]()
Welcome FlockMaster
You'll find most folks begin with "practice birds". This provides them with experience that is very valuable. When you're ready to step up to Barred Rocks of better breeding, let us know how we can help. That is a major side effect of this thread.
Yes, we have every intention of baiting folks into loving Standard bred birds.![]()
Oh my word, Rippy! Poor thing!! Chin up - SURELY spring is not far....I try so hard not to complain, as I know there are folks who have it much worse than me.![]()
You'd be on of those! Hang in there!
Fred, really nice boxes...your birds travel in style!
