50 more days until spring!

Wynette your life sounds like mine! This is my first winter with SINGLE digits and have several roos with frost bite from the first round of FREEZING weather. Then between rounds when it was about 40 my central water system that feeds 10 pens SHATTERED and spilled 110 of water and we have had to hand water 10 pen since.....

Then my car had a low tire and hubby car had a flat, then we had a flat in the truck too. My car started acting weird.... crazy electrical junk THEN the transmission blew out AGAIN (still under warranty than goodness) and the front wheel bearing was out AGAIN.... still under warranty too. The cold is really wearing me out with all the waterers frozen. I have 400 chickens and NEED my waterers.

Hope your life calms down..... I don't think mine ever will..... been my life for 3-4 years now. MAYBE when we move to the new house we will calm down. Then I will not know what to do with all the spare time I have.

Hi, I have been following this thread for a few days and I must say that I was dying of jealousy looking at all the awesome pictures of all of your birds. I am a sort of newbie to chickens or breeding them is more the point. I have had chickens for two years now and I started with Barred Rocks. However, though mine do look good they aren't pure. I got them at a feed store.

I do want to get some pure Barred Rocks. I am currently working on building some new coops for some other birds I'm getting as soon as the weather cooperates. I am in love with the breed and Barred Rocks are beautiful birds.

Thanks for listening to a newbie and I hope I can learn much more. I'm interested in raising and breeding pure BRs and I'm finding a lot of interesting information on this. Thank you. :)

Welcome FlockMaster

You'll find most folks begin with "practice birds". This provides them with experience that is very valuable. When you're ready to step up to Barred Rocks of better breeding, let us know how we can help. That is a major side effect of this thread.
Yes, we have every intention of baiting folks into loving Standard bred birds.

Getting through the harsh winter just keeps getting more frustrating, that's for certain. I've got to somehow pack up over a dozen birds and transport them down to Ky for our spring breeding program. I really, really am hoping for a moderation in the awful weather over the next week.

I know folks who show a lot and take large numbers of birds and transport them long distances face these things all the time. Three times a year is proving to be as challenging and "exciting" as I really need.

Started this travel box last fall. Hopefully, it will warm up just enough to allow me to get back out there finish it. Actually, need to build another too. This is one of my old ones and it's seen better days.

I try so hard not to complain, as I know there are folks who have it much worse than me. :( You'd be on of those! Hang in there!

Fred, really nice boxes...your birds travel in style!

The old style boxes had wire tops, as shown. It was just fine for transporting 9 weeks old juvies. But, for adults or finer birds needed for a demonstrations or exhibiting, the new style box is smooth on the inside, which helps the birds arrive with no feather damage at all. After thousands of miles of good service, that old box hasn't "travelled" in a good while, but makes a nice little sequester space for smaller birds, so I keep it around gathering dust mostly.

I also have this horrible penchant of over building everything. That a good trait in building construction, but when it comes to portable poultry tractors, pens, or travel boxes, it is so completely WRONG.

tell me about it. My "portable" coop hasn't moved in years, even under 70+ winds. And I can no longer (age a factor) pick up my transport crate, even empty.

Thank you. :) Oh, trust me, looking through the first few pages I was :drool and getting very impatient for spring to come. No baiting needed, im hooked! :D

Below is a picture I took today of my Padgett line cockerel at 4 1/2 months old. He is in the middle of a molt so he is looking a little rough. I am very much looking forward to seeing him fill out over the next couple months as I do like the looks of his frame.

Below is a picture of my Horstman line cockerel that I took on August 27 of last year when he was at 4 1/2 months of age. You can compare him at 4 1/2 months old to the 4 1/2 month old Padgett line cockerel above.

And here is a picture of the Horstman line cockerel I took today now at 9 1/2 months of age.

No.... I don't feel like I need to worry about my chin needing to be picked up. I just roll with the punches and we have the resources to fix things like that.... some don't and that would be really hard.... I have been there too.

ALL IS GOOD! Not complaining just commiserating LOL!
