These guys are 9 weeks and 8 weeks the SPPR are 9 and the BPR are 8 weeks.

Ostrich @ 7 weeks. Oh my gosh. Ugliest. Chicken. Ever.
He's normally up and running around. Not sickly. Just caught him sleeping. He looks like he is going through a round of chemo.

send her my way Fred!!!

She's actually #3 in the type/quality department. The two above her, in our early ratings, are better. But, this one? OK, she's got my heart and that sometimes happens. I don't have that screen name for nothin'. LOL

This one is #1. I gotta update her photo.

I want to see this pullet in a better pose. Yeah, like that's easy to do. hahahahaha
Like I can figure out which one she is LOL. I can try ;)

She does look full in this picture, which I like to see.

We had a Northern Goshawk take one of our Juvenile Barred Rocks today, and one was killed last week by a hawk as well. Last week was a girl, I have no idea which one was taken today, just eye accounts from the kids next door who were playing ball with our dog. It was a barred bird. Bummer.. Everyone else took cover, even the silkies.

Hi Aoxa. Good to see your sppr birds; they are growing well and feathering out. The last pullet looks a little weird . . . the pic must have been taken when she was in mid-stride, and her foot looks so fuzzy it looks like it had feathers. Ha ha.

I just wrote up my plan today to cull down to 12 hens and 2 males to keep this winter. Now comes the hard part, to follow through. Maybe next year I'll build a larger barn to keep more.

I plan to take some pics of my 2013 pullets and cockerels and post them here to get opinions on which ones to keep. I seem to be two types in my sppr pullets; I have some "butter-balls" with lots of depth and thick legs, and also some finer boned ones.

Bye for now.

That's about the best photo I got of her this evening. She's such a busy body. She's standing on an incline, not exactly the best level surface to show her off, but there she is, anyhow.
Fred, she's a Dandy...love her head amongst other attributes.

He's the only one still almost fully naked. His primaries look like they are coming in funky. Like angel wing for geese.

My best young teenager for barring is in a pen with the silkies. At 4 weeks he had an eye injury from being pecked (healed now) he is gorgeous. Glad I separated him. Unfortunately my brooder does not allow for easy picture taking.

Thanks for the compliments! :D

“There is no such thing as a Black Maran” and I’m thinking, “You mean that chicken standing there in front of you?”

(um.....there sure are Black Marans - I've got them. Just sayin'.

Aoxa, are the leg colors good on your SPR? They look pinkish in the pics...I'm sure it must be my screen, because I'm pretty sure mine from PEI Chickens have yellow. Hmm...should I get my monitor looked at?

I lost track of this thread...it's been a busy couple of weeks.

Breeding plans. I haven't told too many folks as some think it's nuts to cross varieties, but since Scott took the plunge, I'll dip my toes into the pool as well. I've got some crosses of my pure SPR male over a lovely Columbian female; I used the largest female with the best type, who happened to be a bit darkly pointed, which should help in my endeavor. I'll be breeding the female offspring from this cross back to the male SPR, for several generations. Should be back to SPR coloring in 5 gens., I'm told. The crossed offspring are lovely - BONUS! I've got 6 hatchlings, gosh, they must be 12 weeks now...(I lose track...need to check records), and I think all 6 are female. Holy heck, when does THAT happen?!?

Need to get pics of my chicks from PEI Chickens - they're growing like weeds, and it doesn't even feel right calling them "chicks" - they're juveniles now. Spunky, healthy, vigorous...they are very special to me, and I know I've thanked her 100 times already, but another hearty THANK YOU goes out to Janet!
